It's funny how in  minimg towns, back in the day, an affair or divorce was a big scandal.....even more so in the Afrikaans community

Yup their marriage just unravelled after the death of Leslie ..  and Gus took to the bottle ..  he actually straightened out many years later and ended up involved and got married  to an afrikaans lady from Port nolloth .. she was the  receptionist at the hotel there .. sweet woman she was and seemed to fill the gap in Gus's life ..  Now  down to the story about the wrecked Morris minor ?/

@ Mike .. yes  small  towns  .. scandal  .. but then  those were different days .. i remember  divorcees were  virtually shunned ..   I had a girlfriend at highschool .. every time drive down liesbeek  parkway  .. almost opposite  starke ayres nursery is a block  of  maisionettes  I see them  and memory lane calls ..   this  girl Kathy , her  mother  stayed there .. a divorcee  .. My mother was mortified .. a divorcee ?/  what  are her  daughters going to  turn out to be  ??  actually a laugh when one thinks back ...

@Sandy

I thought the Reshke's lived further out to the East. If from my old house at 21-1st looking towards town, I am thinking they lived on the right side to where I am looking at. This looks too central from what I remember. Where is the trampoline they had in the garden? Peter was an ace at trampolining.

Aaaah so my old memory bank still works! Insofar as the houses and the 4 garages, these were what I used to think were the posh peoples' homes! In other words - senior CDM Management

The only car wreck I remember was at the old nursery school on the Dpt Store side of town somewhere near 5th Ave. My mum was one of the people who ran the nursery and there was this old morris station wagon(?) with wooden exterior trim that we babies were able to play in and on top of.

How it got into town I do not know 'cos no private cars were allowed at that time.

There were i recall  quite a few Morris Minors in the town ..  there were  also a few Morris or Austin  bakkies  .. Old Mr Hawkins  of parks and gardens   drove a creamy yellow coloured one ... Looks like this A 60  pic  attached ... the enclosed  van is a  better view ..now  cast your mind  abck  properly  ...  there were a  few funny cars in town .. i remember the school  staff car was this huge  black creaky american  thing ..  .. the de Pinto's had a BMW Isetta (  opened from the front )( private vehicle )  Mrs castle had a messerschmitt  bubble car  also private ..
