Hi Patricia - ex neighbour in single quarters - remember we shared a kitchen & bathroom in 1989/1990 - i always remember the timeframe - it was over Nam's independance time.

Haven't spoken to Kevin actually - got his number from Goofy (Malcolm Aitken) when he told me Philip had died - felt a bit awkward speaking to Kevin then - what do you say to someone who's brother has just died after not having spoken to them for 20 odd years??"  Not too sure where Markie is these days - saw him about 5/6 years ago - at that time he was living with Philip out on a smallholding in the Durbanville area -he'd just gone thru a really rough patch and wasn't doing too well.  He was working at Philip "handlanger" at Rainbow Chickens.  Haven't seen or spoken to him since - just seemed to lose contact. I know Kenny Aitken sees Kevin every December and even Kevin didn't seem to know where or what Markie was up to.

Hi Yvette, say hi to Renee from me. The years sure have flown. It's amazing to be able to find "lost" friends....we Oranjemunders have a special connection. Heidi is in Cape Town, doing very well for herself, still single. Owns her own design school (Boston House College School of Design), as well as her own design company. I will e-mail you her contact number.

Regards,

Richard, I recently made contact with Kev after 25 years, he's doing good. I can't believe you remember his dog "Bruce" - wow - another puzzle piece. What are you doing in Dubai?
Sandy (Wood)

Sandy,

I just got off the phone, 1 hour phone call to Oz taking with Nicky (& Gabi).

I am an Air Traffic Controller, but have not spoken to aircraft for about 4 years now. I am heavily involved Project Management for the procurement of Air Traffic Equipment for the expansion of Dubai Airport and the Establishment of the new International Airport (Dubai World Central).

Regards
Richard

PS : Cannot wait for Heidi's address, another memory regained.

Howzit again,Richard,

Awesome chinwag we had yesterday!! Still pinching myself .... I remember Kevin and mark well. Very sad about Phillips' passing. Who could forget the Golden Labrador, Bruce? Kevin and Bruce were inseparable ...... They went everywhere together. Bruce was the only dog I know that went to school each day. He was even allowed into the classroom during our studies. I can recall one day Bruce tried to climb / crawl out of the window ( those swivel ones) to get outside, but was a little too big, and the window shattered as a consequence. Can't remember who the teacher was, but he/she was not impressed. Do you remember the black Labrador he had also? I think his name was Hondo. He died before Bruce did.

Cheers.

RichardGerstner

Hey Nick,

I don't remember "Hondo".

I do remember kids throwing those ladybird crackers and Bruce eating them.  Did anyone ever confirm if that was really a dog?  Bruce seemed to different to be a real dog.....

Richard

Nicky, that time u talking about bruce climbing thru the classroom window - wasn't that the time he got locked in at break time by mistake and he could see the guys playing soccer thru the window and he did everything he could to get to them - i remember he used to "play" soccer with the guys at break time.  kevin had this joke that he would put bruce's head between his hands, bring his face up to his and say "Bigger, put your eye to my eye" and put their eyes together........the things one remembers. Kevin really loved that dog and vice versa.  In fact he crawled into all our hearts in 5E of '77 - being an honoury member of the class.

remember how at interhouse sports days and swimming galas bruce would be there with a red ribbon on his collar to support Kevin's house Rhodes?  Apart from being the only dog allowed at school, he was also the only dog allowed at sports/gala days.

he was also handy to have around to finish any left over dental milk - must've had the healthiest teeth among all the others dogs in town  :D

On  the subject of  famous  dogs ..  The  black  labrador  cross  that  used  to  be  the  Belelies dog .  When  Mrs  Belelie passed away  he  just sort of  left  home   . he  had  a variety  of  names  Dingo .. cane and  coke  etc  as  he  took  to  drinking as  well .. he used  to  go  to movies   lots  of  nights  and  became  our  unofficial  mascot  at  the  Tech  for  quite  a time .. spending  the  day  with  us   just  waiting  to   go  for  a drive  on  the  tech  bakkie ..  he  used  to  also  troll  around  the  town   on  sunday mornings   and  if he  saw folk  packing  a bakkie  to  go  to the  beach  he would  jump on  and  " hitch " his ride  to  the beach.. doing  his  rounds   from  shelter to  shelter   scrounging food   and   drink  . I  remember  the  one  day  we  were  all  at  the  beach  and  aftre  the party   carried  on  at  the  single  quarters .. I   then   was  walking  home  afterwards .. and  he joined  me  as  he  would  sometimes  as  the  Belelie  home  was  on  route  to  my  home   to  do  the occasional visit .  .. here were  the  two  of  us  kind  of walking ..   me  staggering  a  bit  and  him holding on  to  my  sleeve  with  his teeth  as  he  was  also  a  bit  unsteady   .. a comical sight I  can  imagine ..   the  one time I  remember  he had  a  gash  on  his  face  and  he  really  worked  that  to  get sympathy and  extra  food ..  he  walked into  the  cafe  with  us  ..  put  front paws  on  the  counter  showed  off  the injured  side  of  his  face  and  put  on  the  saddest  look  you  can imagine  .. it earned  him  a  pie !!    another    one  with  brains  and  chutzpah ...
