Does anyone remember the name of the parrot that used to be in Casey's. Clive, do you remember?

The parrot was called Casey, my dad ain't to sure if the Bar was named after the parrot or the parrot named after the bar!

Again  not  too  sure  if  the  bar  was  named  after  him  or  he  after  the  bar  ..   I  just know of   him  as  being  around  ever  since  I could  remember ...  his  outings  during the  day  were  in  his  cage  on  the  back of  the  bottle  store  delivery  truck  .. I  remember  it as  a black  chev pickup ...  When  he  spent  his  evenings  in  the  bar  he  had  his  friends  and  his  enemies .. mother  natures  creatures  are  very  perceptive .. I remember  this  one  short   guy    ( forgot  name  ,   foreigner )  used  to  come into  caseys  in  the afternoons   and  immediately  casey  saw him  he  would  get  edgy  and  say  a  few  swearwords ..  the  evening  would   progress  with the  two eyeing  each other  out  and  muttering  swear  words  at  each  other ..   quite a  sight ..
When  Auntie  Irene  worked  at  the  bottle  store .. he  escaped  from  his  cage  one  day ( cheeky little lockpicker )   he flew up  into  one of  the  conifer  trees ..   everybody  was  calling  him  to  come  down  and  casey  was  saying " catch me if  you can , catch me  if you  can    you  ##$$??%%rs "    he  eventually  came  down  when one  of the regulars  that  he  liked  persuaded  him  to ,, he liked  his  attention   from  those  in  his  good  books ..

That  will  be  interesting .. cos  all  we  have  is our  experience  of  Casey ..  the  history  is  a  bit  fuzzy  , so  we  await  the   from  the  "horses  mouth "    history of  Casey ...

Yes  George  .. I  used  to  work  as a part  time  barman  in  the  evenings  to  make  extra  cash ...  also  worked  at  stauchslager   bar  and  sportsmans   bar plus  dances  and  functions  at the Rec club ...   and  of course  did  my  fair  bit  of  socialising  there  as  well ........

Anyone know why the bar was called Casey's?

I was reading a great book on the Argus newspapers history of Cape Town, 1875-1997... in 1901 there is mention of a bar/cafe/dining room type place offering meals and refreshments called Casey's..... I was just wondering!

I remember Casey, that parrot could swear in three languages, I think Harry the barman back in the late sixtys early seventys used to take him home . I also remember Casey being entered in a pet competition but was disqualified for swearing at the judges.

Nada Ulbrich (Rall)(RIP)

Ok Mike, here is what I know or was told.  Casey the parrot was bought as a gift for my mom when I was born.  My dad, Johhny Rall,  loved birds and thought my mom would be delighted, which was not the case.  The parrot and her could not get along and my dad had to make a plan.  His next favourite place was Caseys and off the parrot went.  Eventually, 20 years of drink, secondhand smoke and the general life of a "barbird" caught up with Casey the parrot and he fell ill.  He had a bad tummy and my dad brought him home again!  My mom and I nursed him, washed his bum (did he put up a fight on that one!) and tried our best but he died after a week.

thanks  for that  info Nada ...

Then some bright spark bought another one for Casey's (a very young one) and that one had a nervous breakdown - we landed up with it but sadly he didn't survive either ... the lesson? Don't put parrots in pubs!    :nono1:
