Viv Reyneke, I beleive is still in contact with Bruce Dyson

Ricky Barron (RIP)

Hennie married Bruce's sister, Helen, and they live in Pretoria, although they seperted quite a while ago. Bruce, after a stint in Botswana, also moved to Pretoria where he opened an Engineering business and a "chain of shoe stores". After the death of his eldest son he sold the Engineering business and concentrated on the shoe stores. I believe Pepe Freemantle worked with Bruce in the 80s or 90s, so he might be able to give a more updated report on Bruce's whereabouts. Kom Pepe, skrik wakker!

LOL Ricky, Yes i worked with Bruce at Premium Mine from 1981 - 1984. I since then saw Bruce and Carol at the Carousel in 1989 and was the last. I know he lives in Pretoria somewhere and had an Electrical business which he wanted me to join at that stage. Peter du Toit will be able to help as they brother in laws.

Hi Dieter (Bosvark),

You are just around the corner from me, I used to pay my monthly garden service bill at you house.

My sister Elizabeth is in contact with Carol. Liz and Eric Cameron stay in Midrand and I spoke to her today.

Carol and Liz were planning to visit Beth Loglin earlier this year, but Beth sadly passed away before they could make the trip. Let me know if you want me to ask Liz for Carol's number.

Love to Pat.

Keep well

Hi Guys,
Boet Bruce is currently working between Alberton (10 minutes drive from Lionel) and Kroonstad.  Hennie has been in Bethal for a decade or two - two of our sons Chris and Adrian work with him.  Craig also lives in Bethal and works for an auditing firm in Secunda.  I will let them know their past is catching up with them and they can all speak for themselves!
Saw Bruce and Carol over the weekend - we're now 'ou toppies' but still interested in the proposed Jhb/Pta reunion.   Might get to see some of you there.    Boet Steve is also here in Pretoria not far from me.

Hi Ricky,
How are you? You're the only one who will sort of remember me.  Have been enjoying reading all the Oranjemundnewsthe last couple of months but have only now come out of the woodwork as names are popping up now closer to my generation!    See Val now and again when she comes up to Centurion - always great to see her.

Hi Helen,
"sort of remember you?" You were like the 4th sister I never had! I know I haven't seen you for ages, but Mother has kept me informed regarding all of you as well as all the others from that time that are still alive! Although she constantly complains about not being able to remember things, her memories of Oranjemund are incredibly lucid. I agree with you about the generation gaps on this site, and I also read a lot before starting to interact with the "young 'uns", as it's rather addictive, and somebody has to keep them legal! Who would ever have thought we would become the 'older generation', Ooms and Tannies! Stay well and give my regards to Boet Bruce and Boet Steve!
Regards, Ricky.

Hi Ricky,
Trying not to let another 40 years pass before responding to your greeting. Lots of water under the bridge nĂ©.   I remember eating hotdogs with you, Linda, Val and Lesley on Saturdays (and homemade hamburgers at my moms!).
Never in wildest dreams thought I would end up across the Vaal. First 2 years in Pretoria was something like the Israelites in Babylon must have felt - there's work and food but it sure ain't home.   Are you in Cape Town area now?  At some stage Val said you were in Plet .  The boys and I so enjoyed our 6 years living at Uvongo and miss the coastal lifestyle.  Manage to visit friends there a couple of times during the year.
Don't have internet at home and have to use it sparingly at work.  Maybe will catch up with you at one or other of the reunions.   Please say big hi to your mom when you contact her again.
Groete
'ou sus' Helen

Hi Helen,

I do not know if you remember me, I was a good friend of Stephen your brother in the 60s, I remember Stephen playing Bruce's Rolling Stones and your Dad's records - one of the songs on your fathers' records was "From a Jack to a King" - every time I hear it now days makes me think of your folks house in 7th avenue. I left Oranjemund in 1979 and have been living in Cape Town ever since.

Your mother and my mom Ria Opperman were friends in the 60s and 70s. I also remember your mom making us sandwiches which Stephen, Gary (my brother) and I used to hog down. I also remember Stephen being very artistic and talented in many ways. Where is Stephen now days?

I met Paul Freemantle the last time I was up in Gauteng on business and asked him if he new where Stephen was - he did not know. I believe Paul and my sister Elizabeth have been invited to Carol and Bruce for a braai. Elizabeth and her boyfriend Eric live in Midrand and have been there since 1984.

Keep well, Richard

Hi Richard,
Great to hear from you.   Steve often talks about "Richie Rich" and the Oranjemund days - he is in a place called Huis Heloise in Waverley, Pretoria.  He has been on a disability pension for several years and has had his ups and downs but is quite cheerful these days.   He has found buddies to play guitar with and played around with computer programming and devours maths and science literature. I fetch him for the day every second weekend or so.  He will be chuffed if I tell him you've made special mention of him.   "From a Jack to a King" - Ned Miller, was my record, first LP I ever bought (for 60 cents!).  I hear it now and again on the weekend on 702's Solid Gold.  My dad's records were only Mario Lanza and opera.  I remember coming home from the movies sometimes and as we turned the corner at the one and only Oranjemund Store into 7th Avenue, the soprano's and tenor's voices would be floating down the avenue from our house and I would make whoever I was with walk around the block a few times and look for gemsbok in the alleys or something until the "noise" stopped.  Now I can appreciate  'real' music.    Still have a box of some of those LP's that I lug around every time I move house or province.  Liz and I were in the same class at OPS, have a photo to prove it.  Haven't seen her since we left high school - almost got to catch up after 40 years a few weekends ago.  Eric was away so they couldn't make it to the braai Carol had arranged.  Also have a photo somewhere of some of the church ladies on our 'stoep' which includes your mom.    Nice memories.       Gotta run, best wishes, Helen

Hi Helen, Rickie Rich and Gang LOL, Good to see you all on the forum:-) Thanks for the great evening we spent together Richard, it was real great seeing and making contact with you. Helen, I remember you very well and Stephen. I am sorry to hear about Stephen, please send him my best wishes and most important Healing. I am still planning to see Bruce and carol some time as I unfortunately could not go the weekend with Liz to Bruces. My eldest had his theropy session that afternoon. As you might not know, Craig (my eldest) suffers with Schizophrenia. He is undergoing Hypnosis therapy and progressing very well. All I want and am Praying for is his healing and to be able to get a work and have a life. Craig has  Matric, Web Development and N+ Certificate and to date has never been given the oppertunity to work. But I am Trusting that something will happen soon.

Please send all  my best to all your families and keep in touch.

Regards,

Paul (Pepe)
