Johan Van As Coetzee (van As - Second name)

My father worked in Oranjemund from 1969 -1987 and then got transfered to Koingnaas and Kleinzee mines.
Included is a family photo - on the left is my father, in front of him my mother, then my brother, Marius and his wife Marinda. I am behind them.
I added another pic of my parents that was taken in December 2007 here in Walvisbaai.

Andre I think you are quite a bit younger than me, so I wouldn't remember you but I do recognise your parents from the photo's . What were their names? where did they live? where did they work?   May just rattle my old brain cells here.

My father, Johan, worked for security. My mother, Cecile, worked at the commando or SWATF Area Force unit that was close to the security check point in those years.

We first lived at 24/3 and then (1977) moved to E37/9 - right next to Mr Zandhuis.

Yes, he worked with Bert de Jager - I still remember him. Also Koos Brink, Bom Coetzee

Andre .. your fathers face rings bells ...  .. I recall going to  after bar parties .. they used to  jokingly say .. Van As .. ( an anglesismse )  from the ashwagon ?/ maybe i got it confused . but thats a memory ...

I have not heard that before....although I never visited the bars and neither did my father. I know that many a time when somebody asked who my father was and I replied "Johan Coetzee" they did not immediatly know which "Johan" it was and I would say "Johan Van AS" and they would know then.

Ek het saam met jou pa by sekuriteit gewerk.  Ek was Ed Knoesen se sekretaresse.  Het saam met Ben Wiese, Koos Brink, Roger Burchell, Bom Coetzee, Andre Schmidt, Willie Theron, Jorrie Jordaan, Dave Hattingh, Bert de Jager en Evert Geldenhuys gewerk. Patsy Prinsloo en Debbie Biccard het voor met die permitte gewerk. Ek onthou ook jou ma wat by die Kommandos gewerk het. Stuur asb baie groete vir jou pa, as hy dalk weet waar enige van die ander manne is wat ek genoem het. laat asb weet Ek weet Koos Brink en Willie Theron is oorlede. Daar was 'n Ovambo tee man, Joel, wat my die bynaam "Kashupie" gegee het.  My van destyds toe ek daar gewerk het was Heusdens.

Ok I had your dad confused .. with someone else  but yes bells ringing in my head  ..  I see now he worked for security ..  Ask him if he remebers a night that he got called out  on a saturday night .. me and Viv Worth were in trouble at  checkpoint charlie ..  we were both  very  dronk and onbeskof .. he showed amazing  restraint  cos that night i actually deserved a klap ...  that I did not lose my job cos of that incident ..
