The Nel brothers were  Leon, Tubby, Pieter and Andre(Jumbo) and then a sister Hannelie.

Leon Nel married Salome Swarts  -  they lived in 3rd ave near the GM  -  she has a sister Alta.
Tubby later married Trix Smit.  She was married to Riaan Smit who was a 'landros', but they later divorced and then she married Tubby, but they also divorced.
Pieter got married to a girl I don't know.
Jumbo and Susan Pieterse, the twin sister of Mariaan who is Adriaans wife, got married, but they also got divorced.

Hope it is clear now.

We bumped into Jumbo in Springbok a couple of years ago and he was working for a trucking company, based in Okahandja.

Jumbo works for Richard Himmel (a german guy, but he speaks Afrikaans and English very well also) who used to be and electrician appie in OMund.  He owns a trucking company, as well as the company that builds all the new power lines in NAM & Botswana and in Mosambique   -  Power 2000.  They are actually based in Tsumeb.

image14 I actually had Tsumeb typed in and then wanted to confirm with Mike and he said Okahandja - so I was right!

About 8/9 yrs ago, the company i was working for supplied machinery to the food & beverage industry, and i had to phone around making appointments for my boss to try and get a foot in the door for sales.  I phoned a company up Ceres way I think it was and asked for the Production Manager - who do I end up speaking to ??? Tubby Nel..........i just remember they produced condensed milk......for the life of me I can't remember the company's name now.  When it was confirmed that it was THE Tubby Nel from O'mund, we ended up having a lekker long chat about O'mund, he was asking me about the family, etc.  We got so engrossed in catching up like  only us O'munders can, I completely forgot/ignored why i phoned in the first place.  Small small world we live in.............an O'munder around every corner.............

If I remember correctly, Tubby was working for Nestle SA at some time.  Then he had some serious accident, but I don't know if he still works for them.  Will try to confirm this at some later stage.

In photo No. 7 looks like "Tubby" on the right of the photo talking to his brother, don't know this brother's name, maybe Leon? Photo No. 5 was taken when I seem to recall the Appies challenging the Netball Club to a game of netball in the early 80's. Don't remember who won, most probably would have been the Netball Club.

That's it Dalene - it was Nestle he was working for - knew it was a well known company, just couldn't remember which one.

Lance  -  you are right.  It is Tubby on the right talking to his brother Leon (the one with the glasses)  and sitting infront of them in the chair is Rosemary.

Thinking about Rosemary that is about to leave OPS after 27 years as a teacher, there are only two "old" timers left at the school that spring to mind, namely.... Dawn Watt (nee' Johansen(spelling)) and Coreen Swanepoel......

End of an era....

Hi all

I recently ran into Tubby when he came to visit a friend of mine at a camping site in Mosselbay! He did work for Nestle but he was based in Robertson for a while.  He still looks EXACTLY the same and you can imagine the surprise when I recognised him. I can't remember where he is living now but if anyone would like to get hold of him I know that Karen (my friend here in Montagu) would be able to put us in touch with him.

Chat soon.
