Anything That Floats!

The last anything that floats race was held about 5 or 6 years back and attracted a crowd of about 300. The cars were parked around the Yacht Club Bend, and much merriment was to be had by all.

The question is who else has partaken in an Anything That Floats Race.

I remember the IT department having a floating office with Pc's and alles, then ditching the pc's and stuff into the water..... great eggs were flying everywhere in the battle....

Yep, 1985/6 took on the mighty Pink Pan afloat a dozen cardboard apple boxes tied together and covered with a huge ground sheet. Shared the experience with Chad Lingard and his sister.
Remember Sean Pengelly's "aquatricycle", a bicycle frame with 2 44gallon drums for back paddle wheels and an old petrol tank for the front.

Andrew, I was on the phone to Sharn today, he works for Freddy Hirsch Group in Cape Town, gave him the address of the site, and asked him to forward it onto Greg who is in the UK at the moment, ... Small world!

Hi Goofy....my dad (Brian Masterton) helped build the Tintanic....he worked at the power station for years.

I remember that day when the titanic sank, i think my mum has a pic of it, i will have to ask her to send it to me and i'll scan it on. That was quite funny. Sharon

The Tintanic was built in the power station and crewed by Roy Fields,Frankie Quirk and Dave Baxter ( a contractor at the time ) I was the project manager and the lookout to see if Brian Thornton our foreman was coming down the station so we could make a quick getaway.I'll never forget the sea trials the week before the big race, we launched it in the pink pan and the crew paddled it out to mid pan and then gave it some stick back to the shore,to anyone passing by it must have looked like the Loch Ness Monster.The downfall with the design was that all three crew had to crank by hand and the man at the rear had to bail out any water that had accumulated,in the end when in the lead and only a few hundred metres from the line sadly it sank.
          Brian Thornton took up from the design and won the race easily the next year but he used leg power to drive the paddles,which made it a lot easier. Great days though and will never be forgotten.

That "Tintanic" lay for many years after, rotting away in the sun behind the Boat sheds. Many a kid had a great time......
