For those of you who knew Jimmy Ockwell, his friends around the world have created a memorial link. Here is that link...  http://www.rotrek.co.uk/Cond/Jimmy/index.htm

The link also works from the Lost Diamonds Board.

Aah  howabsolutely sweet .. 2 innocent young tykes not yet exposed to the  joy and yes rigours of life .. ... I went through Jimmys  memorial website some  time ago  and yes i shed tears .. to be remembered so well as this  gregarious  larger than life  person ..  its more than anyone could ask for ...  I go back to the old saying  of /// " when you enter the world you cry .. make it your intent  to live your life in such a way that when you depart that others cry "  .. I leave it there ..

whenever i feel down I have gone back to that website .. it teaches  gratitude ...
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .

Clive i rember you and Jimmy at that age.Love Mavis.(Ps.we where al like one big family in o,m)

Mavis, too true, I remember saying to someone that us kids had more uncles & aunts than if we had stayed in the UK.

I think we were one large extended family, unfortunatly that is no longer the case in OM. Very few people do put down roots there now.

We moved to Oranjemund from the UK when I was almost 6, leaving behind aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents but we never felt the loss as we also had so many adopted uncles, aunts and grandparents. Sad thing was when it came time to speak to our real grandparents on Christmas day we never really knew what to say!

True, I felt the same way going back every ten years or so, and letters never realy filled the gap either.

My mom has a brother and sister still living in the UK and phones them now and again and they chat for a while - catching up on family news but then run out of things to talk about. When she phones her friend in Cape Town they are on the phone for ages and never run out of things to say!

With regard to the putting down of roots I think Mike and his brothers must be one of the last "big" families in town - with all three of the brothers still living here and having 6 kids between them that all, except for wee Ethan go to school here. There are three Alexander girls all in the same grade - luckily for the teachers all in different classes though!
