THE PIANO MAN. Directed by Joe Recrosio. At the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest until March 28 at 8.30pm. TRACY BARTLETT reviews

THE Piano Man, Joe Recrosio's tribute to the great songwriter, singer and pianist Billy Joel, opened last week at GrandWest's Roxy Revue Bar, and looks set to be a hit.

With a career spanning four decades, Joel's music is both loved and highly regarded by people of all ages, which is evidenced by his astounding worldwide record sales of more than 150 million, as well as his multiple awards and accolades over the years.

Therefore one would imagine that attempting to recreate Joel's considerable magic would be a daunting task.

However, musical director Recrosio and accompanying seasoned musos appear to have done just that - with considerable success.

By the second song, My Life, the audience was already enthusiastically clapping along, and the group continued to impress and entertain as they led the audience on a musical journey of Joel's illustrious career.

It included hits such as Uptown Girl, Just The Way You Are as well as the iconic Piano Man.

I have to confess that I never realised just how much of Joel's music is socially aware and the group's stirring rendition of We All Go Down Together, accompanied by disturbing images of the Vietnam war, was spellbinding, as was We Didn't Start The Fire.

Piano Man features some of Cape Town's finest musicians and I was blown away by the honeyed timbre of Candice Malander-Thorne's vocals as well as the smooth, rich tones emanating from Dan Shout's saxophone.

This show obviously hits the spot as, by the end of the evening, the audience vociferously demanded an encore, and were rewarded by two more of Joel's best-loved hits.

The warm intimacy of the Roxy Revue Bar lends itself perfectly to this enthusiastic tribute to one of the world's greatest performers.

The Piano Man is a wonderful dose of nostalgia served up by a tight group of talented musicians who clearly love what they do. All in all, a great night out.
