Customs Orriface and SA registered Vehicles

  There is a Nam Customs Official (orriface) stopping all SA registered cars and deamnding payment of 16.5% of book value tax on all SA registered cars. He targets mainly woman driving around town and in the parking lot of the hospital. If you are a Nam citizen and have a SA registered car he is impounding them and you have to drive it to the border post and leave it there. I can understand about the Nam citizens as they have to pay the tax vis a vie if they are in SA permanently and like we do, but most of the SA registered cars are driven by ex pats who are on work permits or visas. Nobody seems to know what exactly the law is. Apparently he did this 6 years ago and only stopped when new computers were bought for the customs offices and new fax machine and tv. So beware all SA registered car owners. If you have a new vehicle that costs roughly 300 000.00 you will have to pay 50 000.00 and recover from the government when you leave. Fat chance the tax man owes me 10 000.00 and that is after 2 years havn't seen a cent of that money!!!!!!!!! him if you see him!

Here as in Oranjemund, he has not hit Rosh Pinah yet. But he is targeting Nam citizens/perm res with SA registered cars. All those with SA registered cars are being interrogated and he has a list of vehicles to impound!!!!!!!

So...it's the people with ZA cars who live in Omund, not the visitors? I have just had two different ZA cars staying at my house the last week.....

Namibians or South Africans with perm res are being targeted, if you a SA citizen on a work visa you are safe, because technically you are only going to be in the country till your visa expires... It's a long and complicated story actually... When I wanted to buy a car 2 years ago I did a bit of research and there is almost no way around not paying import duty. It's much easier as a SA citizen whose has perm res in Nam to buy a car that is in Nam already than to bring one across the border... and then when and if you leave you just sell if too a Namibian.... Plus if you have a Nam Registration there is no where to send the speeding fines to that you get in SA

And a hell of a lot cheaper and less hassels than trying to bring a car you owned in Namibia in to South Africa.
If I remember it was 14% vat and 16 % import duty, ( On the official book value of the car), then international police clearances and proof that the vehicle was suitable for SA conditions and a whole lot of other crap.
It was far cheaper to sell the dam vehicles and buy again in SA.
