I think in these depressing times, that once all the VS and possible retrenchee's leave Oranjemund, the mine should sell an old bulldozer and use the funds to throw a moerofa moral boosting Spit braai on the mainroad for the remaining employee's.... just make sure there is plenty of ice cold draught, that way mine management gets a chance to rub shoulders with their remaining workforce, hear their woes, calm their uncertanties and then give a roaring speech on how we will succeed.......

JUst my 2 cents....

Are there really so many people leaving? Were they retrenched? Hope they already have jobs lined up because jobs here in SA are scarce too.

Florrie, as of yet, nobody has been retrenched, all the people that are leaving have taken VS (Voluntary Seperation), a carrot (Carat) was dangled in front of them, and they started leaving already last year.... it is hoped that by doing this, nobody will have to be retrenched, I think the closing dates for applying are the 16 February....

I hear more than 300 employees have already submitted for VS on this 2nd round.... the mine needs 300 more to go.....

What is happening, sheep being sheep, a few start to panic, and a ripple occurs, people see the Advance trucks circling the laager, the houses emptying out, and fear for the future and jump onto the VS train...

Mark my words, this mine will pick up, but will never ever be be overweight with unwanted staff again...

Great idea Michael, I also agree one hundred percent - Oranjemund's probably quiet right now, and the mood a bit down, but our lady in the desert WILL NEVER BE DEAD! Simply impossible.

Long live our old lady of the desert ... and yes if  sensibility  prevails , and  past mistakes are not repeated , and proactive plans are made for sustainability ..   woo_hoo

Bertie i also love the "lady of the desert".. people who did not grow up there or lived there for some time cannot understand the "bond" we have with Oranjemund and the people. Please keep her 'alive and well".. it means a lot to so many of us..
