I've lived here 12 years and will never understand such primitive behaviour ...

Saudi court sentences 75-year-old woman to 4 months in prison for mingling with men

Cairo: The sentencing of a 75-year-old widow to 40 lashes and four months in prison for mingling with two young men who were reportedly bringing her bread has sparked new criticism of Saudi Arabia's ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.

Khamisa Sawadi, who is Syrian but was married to a Saudi, was convicted and sentenced last week for meeting with men who were not her immediate relatives. The two men, including one who was Sawadi's late husband's nephew, were also found guilty and sentenced to prison terms and lashes.

The woman's lawyer, Abdel Rahman al-Lahem, said he plans to appeal the verdict, which also demands that Sawadi be deported after serving her prison term. He declined to provide more details and said his client, who is not serving her sentence yet, was not speaking with the media.

So Sorry  I  would not be able to live in a country like that ...  I  would get into trouble for opening my mouth ... Sis   under  such archiac   rule  women  are no better  than  camels  or  any  other thing a man posesses..

Again  see the  movie Osama  ..  that  will really get the blood boiling ...

and yes  I  would not waste my time visiting either ..   so  goodbye Dubai !!

I agree with you Sandy. As for women being no better than camels to them, actually, camels are worth much much more. I struggle to keep my mouth shut ... actually, I have had problems in the past for saying what I think. On one occasion I did a visa run to an Iranian islands just off the coast from the UAE and thought I would never be allowed to board the plane and leave after I had a major go at the customs authorities at the airport. I told them that I came from a free country where women were equal to me and that I would therefore not bow before primitive creatures who have no consideration for women.

That said, things are not as bad here in the UAE. Although I do remember a ruling issued by the Court of Cassation about 8 years ago stating that a man is allowed to beat his wife if she deserves it, as long as he doesn't break any bones or leave any marks ... Oooooooh, my blood is starting to boil again  thumper thumper

this kind of barbarism in all forms takes place  on our own doorstep. Unfortunately very few have the courage to make a stand against it. Take Zimbabwe for example where we have a tyrant surrounded by thugs raping a country and its citizens into whimpering submission, starvation and death and the AU and the UN are either unwilling or incapable of arresting these ba........ds and trying them for crimes against humanity.
