New Zealand couple flees after $7.8m bank blunder

    * Couple asked for $NZ10,000 overdraft
    * Bank gave them $NZ10 million instead
    * NZ Police and Interpol now chasing the pair

NEW Zealand police are searching for a couple who have allegedly fled with millions of dollars that was accidentally deposited into their account.

The couple, Huan Di Zhang and Hui Gao, is understood to have received a $NZ10 million ($7.8 million) deposit after asking Westpac Bank for a $NZ10,000 overdraft, NZPA is reporting.

The couple ran a service station in Rotorua, according to NZPA.

The store shut down earlier this month after its operator, Heights Service Limited, went into receivership.

"The individuals associated with this account are believed to have left New Zealand and police (are) working through Interpol to locate those individuals," said Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey of New Zealand Police.

"Westpac Bank has recovered some of the money which had been inappropriately withdrawn."

I heard in the News today that they still have not apprehended The couple, Huan Di Zhang and Hui Gao.

They are believed to be somewhere in ASIA with $3,000,000 its a bit like looking for "Osama Bin Laden"



The New Zealand bank said the person responsible for the mistake had MISTAKENLY put the decimal point

in the wrong place !!!!

I wished the hell he was working at my bank.

Can you imagine what his work mates are saying...............jeez

The problem facing the Westpac opportunists is they left such an obvious trail behind that as soon as Interpol stretches out its long arm they will be hoiked back to New Zealand to face trial. However, the following character seem to do it the right way. Read on:

Outside Bristol Zoo in the UK there is a car park for 150 cars and 8 coaches.

There  also used to be a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars  £1 and coaches £5.

This parking attendant worked there for  all of 25 years , then one day just didn't turn up for work...

"Ho hum", said Bristol Zoo Management - "better  phone up the City Council and get them to send a new parking attendant"  ......

"Err no", said the Council, "that  car park is your responsibility" ...

"Err no", said  Bristol Zoo Management, "the attendant was employed by the City Council,  wasn't he?" .....

"Err NO!"

Sitting in his villa in Spain is a bloke who had been taking  daily the car park fees amounting to an estimated £400 per day at Bristol Zoo  for the last 25 years. That amounts to about 3.6m pounds sterling or US$9m.

So now you know where South African car park attendants got the the idea from........

Nary a hide nor hair of them since they scarpered, other than a report they were in Hong Kong where it seems there is no extradition to New Zealand.
The wife's problem is that she's a New Zealander and almost inevitably the draw of home and family is going to lure her back here. When that happens doubtless there will be a wall of smiling muscle at passport control to welcome her home.

At boarding school, ran out of pocket money too early in the term. Rugby season in Cape Town and parking was sought after. Saw the gap in the market. The school used to charge folk for parking on the school grounds when there were big games on at Newlands. Someone had slipped up with arranging for attendants this specific Saturday to man the gates. Watching from the hostel verandah as cars paused at the gate momemtarily expecting to be charged by a scholar, but alas no gateman... ok freebie parking today. No way Hosé... 5 minutes later there were 2 entrepreneurial boarders dressed and tending the gate.
Gee, we lived like kings for the rest of the term.

Bank runners Leo Gao and Kara Hurring are not being pursued by New Zealand Police in China.

Nine weeks after the pair fled the country with $3.8 million of mistakenly directed bank money, police are still undertaking "the legal process" required to put officers on Chinese soil.

Inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper refused to comment on the specifics of the process.

"We are still working through a legal process," he told the Weekend Herald. "Until the legal process is complete we cannot operate in a foreign country without some agreement."

He did not know whether Chinese authorities were actively looking for the fugitives.

The pair - whose disappearance sparked international debate about falsely awarded money - have been on the run since the first week of May. -
