The gunman behind the carnage at a Texas military base hollered "Allahu Akbar!" before unleashing a bloody rampage that left more than a dozen dead, an onlooker told investigators.

"We do have a witness who reported that," Col. John Rossi said Friday morning from Fort Hood.

"Allahu Akbar" means "God is great" in Arabic.

Rossi, during the morning briefing, also praised Sgt. Kimberly Munley, a civilian cop who exchanged gunfire with Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan and plugged him four times - even though she had already been shot.

"She did a remarkable job," Rossi said.

Hasan was unconscious and in stable condition, breathing with the aid of a ventilator. Munley was also in stable condition, officials said.

"She walked up and basically engaged him," Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, said on 'Good Morning America' Friday. "I think, certainly, this could've been far worse."

Witnesses described Hasan, who was wearing an Army uniform during the assault, as steely calm. He paused only to reload one of his handguns. Hasan lay motionless after the shooting, leading officials to mistakenly believe he was dead.

The death toll from the murderous attack rose from 12 to 13 early Friday after a woman died from gunshot wounds. Rossi said 28 people were recovering from their injuries.

The gunman, an Army shrink who specialized in combat stress, was about to be deployed to Afghanistan. Sources close to him said he objected to going to battle against other Muslims.

After the shooting, soldiers on the sprawling base scurried to help the wounded. Some tore their uniforms, creating makeshift bandages to treat the injured, as Fort Hood went into emergency lockdown.

Cone praised the soldiers for their quick reaction.

"God bless these soldiers," Cone said. "As horrible as this was it could have been worse."

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) said Hasan - who had worked with the wounded for years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center - was angry about being sent to war and tried to get his orders changed.

The people in the building Hasan shot up were mostly soldiers preparing for their deployment.
Texas TV station KXXV reported that the gunman told a civilian as he passed that he was shooting only military men.

She said he targeted specific people as he stalked through a deployment center, two handguns blazing.

In what should have been one of the most secure places in the country, frightened military families huddled behind locked doors - in some cases comforted by soldiers calling from faraway war zones.

Followed this story on SKY this morning..... gonna do big damage to the US Moral...... Who can you trust.....

The whole "war" has lost it's momentum and is getting bogged down.... either NUKE the entire country or get out!
