MARK COLVIN: It began with an insignificant fine and it blossomed into a tissue of lies.

When the former Federal Court judge Marcus Einfeld lied about a speeding ticket, he could never have imagined it would end in jail. But today, the former human rights commissioner left court in an armoured truck, on his way to prison.

There he's set to stay for the next two years.

In the NSW Supreme Court, the 70-year-old was sentenced to three years in jail with a two-year non-parole period on charges of perjury and perverting the course of justice.

The former Queen's Counsel held his face in his hands and almost fell upon hearing the sentence.

Karen Barlow was in court for PM.

KAREN BARLOW: Marcus Einfeld used to preside over one of the highest courts in Australia. Today, he left in a police truck.

Einfeld is now a convicted criminal who will be spending the next three years in jail, less for good behaviour.

The commander of the NSW Fraud Squad, Detective Superintendent Colin Dyson.

COLIN DYSON: This was a very lengthy, very protracted, very intricate investigation. The outcome today is the result of some excellent investigative work by Strike Force Chanter and the Fraud Squad. I think the sentence is appropriate.

KAREN BARLOW: Marcus Einfeld had appeared confident before the sentence.

He arrived early and mingled and joked with family members and supporters before the judge entered the chamber.

During the two-hour long sentencing he sat quietly with his eyes closed, only intently staring at Justice Bruce James when it came to the crux of the matter.

When it was asked that he understood the sentence, he appeared to crumble, staggering against a railing and catching himself before he fell.

As the sheriffs came to take him away, Einfeld embraced his daughter, farewelled his supporters, received jellybeans from his son, and said his bag was packed.

There were quite a few tears in the courtroom, but son Ed Enfield tried to maintain a sense of humour as he was jostled by the media throng as he left the court.

ED EINFELD: How many tickets on the bus? One, two, three, four?

KAREN BARLOW: Today's sentence brings to an end a three-year dram, a two-and-a-half year police investigation and a long and stellar legal career.

On the 8th of January 2006, Marcus Einfeld's silver Lexus tripped a speed camera in the Sydney suburb of Mosman.

Instead of a paying the fine and taking the three demerit points, Einfeld chose to perjure himself. Legal commentator and barrister Greg Barns.

GREG BARNS: He told a magistrate, in fact he testified before a magistrate, he hadn't been driving his car when he was clocked doing over the speed limit in Sydney. He then provided police with a long statement in which he talked about who might have been driving the car. That turned out to be false. There were a number of other falsehoods in that particular statement and it was from there that he got himself into big trouble with being charged essentially with the perjury and making a false statement with intent to pervert the course of justice.

KAREN BARLOW: There was just elements of the ridiculousness in all this with the fact that the woman he alleged to be driving turned out to be dead.

GREG BARNS: That's right. Professor Teresa Brennan, I think her name was, who he said was driving the car in fact turned out to be dead. There were then allegations made about other cases where other names of people had been used.

KAREN BARLOW: Justice Bruce James took into account Einfeld's good character references, a career of humanitarian volunteer work, his age, poor health, clear criminal record and the effect of his catastrophic fall from grace.

But he also says the attempt to cheat the justice system was premeditated and took considerable planning.

Justice James said that as a top legal practitioner, Einfeld must have fully appreciated the gravity of lying to the justice system.

Detective Superintendent Colin Dyson agrees.

COLIN DYSON: The message this sends is that anyone who is thinking about engaging in this type of activity, it's certainly not worth it. For the sake of a small monetary penalty, peoples' lives can be absolutely ruined.

KAREN BARLOW: Greg Barns believes Einfeld is being used as an example.

GREG BARNS: It was the very fact that he would go to jail which was the public humiliation, the final public humiliation for Einfeld. And if he got a six-month sentence most people would have said, 'Well, the fact that he's going to jail at all is severe punishment.' So it does seem to be quite a tough sentence.

KAREN BARLOW: But even people who provided character references for Marcus Einfeld agree with the sentence.

Robert Goot SC is the President of the Council of Australia Jewry.

ROBERT GOOT: Marcus is a, can be a very impressive, persuasive, charismatic, advocate and personality. But he has obviously got flaws and what has happened today is very sad, indeed tragic. But I believe that given the seriousness of the offence, the sentence is not surprising.

KAREN BARLOW: The Law Council of New South Wales and the State Attorney-General John Hatzistergos also say the sentence was appropriate.

Detective Superintendent Colin Dyson says he has no sympathy for the former legal high flier.

COLIN DYSON: I don't believe anyone is above the law.

KAREN BARLOW: Do you think Einfeld thought he was above the law?

COLIN DYSON: I don't know what was acting in his mind. I think only one person knows the answer to that. All I know is there's no winners here today, but justice was served.

We here in Qld go to the polls tomorrow, we have a Labor Gov.incumbent (they have been in Gov this last 11 years) and it looks like they are about to get dumped by the (LNP) Liberal National Party.

What is amazing (we take for granted) how they give up that power to the other party without a shot fired or a riot.........

An elderly father and his son were brutally bashed in a home invasion in Auckland early this morning.

A 63-year-old man and his 29-year-son were hospitalised after being badly beaten with a weapon, the older man suffering severe head injuries, a cut wrist, as well as a fractured back.

The younger man suffered cuts and bruises to his face. A third female member of the Asian family was uninjured after the attack shortly after 5am in the upmarket suburb of Epsom.

Police are hunting three men and a getaway vehicle, which is damaged.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Timms, of the Glen Innes CIB, say police are looking for a dark green saloon with a damaged rear bumper on the passenger side and a missing wing mirror on the driver side.

He described the home invasion as a "very concerning, gruesome and cowardly attack on two defenceless victims, who have been seriously harmed.

The level of violence used by these cowards could have easily been fatal".

The three men are believed to be Pacific Islander, aged in their late teens or early twenties.

They are all approximately 1.8 to 1.9 metres tall and of medium build. All are believed to have been wearing dark clothing.

A man has been arrested over the 1987 death of a woman who slammed head first into a Sydney street while her bag was being snatched from a moving car.

NSW homicide detectives aided Queensland police on Friday with the arrest of a 45-year-old man at Bundaberg.

The man, formerly from Maroubra in Sydney's east, was refused bail and is expected to be extradited back to Sydney and charged with murder.

Police allege Po Cin Lim, who was 66 years old, was standing at a street corner in Sydney's CBD on October 5, 1987, when a man travelling in a passing car allegedly grabbed at her handbag.

Ms Lim was dragged alongside the car for several metres before falling head first onto the curb and suffering fatal head injuries.

The man failed to stop and allegedly fled the scene.

Strike Force Alukea was formed in July 2008 and inquiries by detectives revealed that the vehicle was also allegedly used in two robberies shortly before Ms Lim's death.

Detectives are also searching for a second man who is believed to have been involved in her alleged murder.

The man who was arrested on Friday is expected to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates' Court on Monday, when NSW detectives will make an application for his extradition to Sydney.

A police spokesman said the man is expected to be charged with murder after his arrival in Sydney.

"London - Statistics compiled by the European Commission indicate that there is more violent crime in Britain than in South Africa.
The British public, who are often warned about the situation regarding crime in South Africa, were caught off-guard by this news.

As far as violence in relation to population size is concerned, Britain is at the top of the list according to these statistics, with 2 034 violent crimes for 100 000 people in 2007.

In Austria this figure is 1 677 for 100 000 people, in South Africa it's 1 609 and in Sweden it's 1 123. The South African figure was an average for the period 2006 to 2007.

According to the British media, however, South Africa is still the world's murder capital, with approximately 20 000 murders committed here annually, compared to 921 in Britain.

Europe's most violent

The statistics are derived from European Commission documents, and were also distributed by the United Nations.

The British Conservative Party presented the data in the form of a table, and said the Labour party is to blame for the fact that Britain is now being considered Europe's most violent nation.

On the list, labelled the "list of shame" by the Conservatives, South Africa (3rd) and Canada (6th) are the only two non-European countries in the top ten.

The Daily Mail, however, was told by experts that the fact that "violence" is interpreted differently in different countries should be taken into account. For instance, where a disturbance is considered a violent offence under British law, in other countries such as South Africa, it's only considered a violent offence if someone is assaulted.

Another fact which has the British public concerned is that the incidence of violence has risen by 77% since 1998.

News websites were buzzing about the information on Thursday, and South Africans in Britain took part in the commentary with great enthusiasm.

Safe?

A certain Callum wrote on the Daily Mail's website that he didn't believe, even for a second, that the crime level in Britain is higher than in South Africa.

"Britain and Europe are safe places to live."

In turn, Dean from Cape Town wrote that the news about Britain's crime levels didn't surprise him in the least, and that it was precisely for that reason that he moved to South Africa.

"I feel much safer walking down the streets of South Africa. Most of the crime that happens here is in Johannesburg."

Another sceptic, Alan from London, believed the South African government's policy is "not to properly record the true crime figures".

Confirmed in the Sunday times today .. crime statistics manipulated  vis , crimes that that would not make it to court ,, including  cases of child rape  where the hopes of finding the perpetrator  were slim .. these files were hidden in  back rooms in quite a few police stations .. Ok so they say  its  only a few , but a few could be the tip of the iceberg ?? was there a secret directive ?? was it just plain laziness ,, or misplaced loyalty to the  leading party to try make them look good  in a flood of increasing bad press on crime  ?? Fact is there is a whistleblower who  was suspended for opening the can of worms , he now suddenly reinstated .. and now the new boys are asking for all police stations to be audited ...  Ok now the burning question ,, who do they blame it on ??? .. Mbeki and his  previous cosy cover up cabinet ,,  or maybe no  they  may even lapse totally  and  stoop so low as to blame it on apartheid as a legacy of previous police  cover up policy  when opponents of the old regime " jumped " out of 10th floor  windows etc ..  tongue in cheek  ,, "hell man its hard  to eradicate  this  legacy  even though  we have  affirmed  our police  force with  overweight  lazy folk " Ok that was a swipe .. there  are a lot of good deedicated  folk still left in  our  police force .. but  message has  to  be brought to bear on all  that  their  first  tenet is to protect and serve .. untill that happens ,, well ?? Oh and there other swing around  from crappy liberal  policy ,, one of the  leaders is again saying the  regulations should  be  reviewed as cops  are now scared to use  any form of  even reasonable force  to aprehend .. lots of burning questions ...

"CHILDREN on school holidays cowered under tables as an armed man allegedly robbed a McDonald's restaurant in Launceston today.

The man allegedly threatened staff and customers with a broken bottle and escaped with cash during a busy lunchtime period about 1.15pm.

A 38-year-old Launceston man is helping police with their inquiries, after he was arrested a short distance away from the McDonald's at Kings Meadows.
Detective Joe Riley said an amount of cash was given to a man, who is alleged to have wielded improvised weapon at staff,

He praised about 30 customers, who all got under tables, and staff.

A shaken witness who with her young son said the McDonald's staff had done a fantastic job, dealing with the situation, clearing the children's playground and checking that everyone was okay after the robbery."

A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked with a slab of kerbing during a robbery in Mt Lawley early this morning.

The man from Bassendean was walking home along the cycleway in Whatley Crescent when he was approached by two men who demanded money at 3.20am.

The 33 year-old man refused and he was attacked by the two men using a stake, branch and piece of kerbing. He was struck on the head and his wallet was stolen.

Police have cordoned off a section of the footpath at the corner of Guildford Road and Whatley Crescent as they investigate the incident.

The man was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital by St John Ambulance and treated for swelling to his head and upper body.

Police are seeking witnesses to the attack and are looking for two men both described as being caucasian, 165cm tall, with short dark hair and wearing dark jeans and light coloured tops.

An armed bank robber fled with just £2000 following a raid on a branch in Glasgow's South Side.

The Lloyds TSB Bank, in Cathcart Road, was targeted by a man who threatened staff with a gun before fleeing with the cash.

Police said no firearm was discharged and no one was injured, although staff were left badly shaken.

The suspect left the bank yesterday at 4pm and entered a silver coloured saloon car, which was driven by a second male towards Holmlea Road in Cathcart.

Detective Sergeant Jane Lawson said: "We believe the car was parked outside the bank a short time prior to the robbery. I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the car, or the suspects, outside the bank to contact the police."

The raid comes just months after a security guard was injured in an armed attack outside another bank.

Masked robbers with a sawn-off shotgun and an axe escaped with at least £100,000 after they targeted a Group 4 security van delivering cash to the Bank of Scotland in Busby Road, Clarkston, last September.

A masked raider armed with an axe forced the two security guards into the bank.

He emptied the ATM and placed the cash in the back of a waiting BMW, which was driven by an masked accomplice armed with a sawn-off shotgun.

The robber then took the guards to their van, emptied it of cash the pair then fled the scene towards Mearns Road with a six-figure sum.
