Well folks - chistmas is approaching FAST.

The MAD IRISH are at it again - I counted 10 christmas trees on my way home on Saturday Night.

Trees in front room - or houses with the full christmas decorations out side.
i not sure about the rest of the world but most people here have their trees in their front windows and leave the curtains open,  My house is too much of a mess for that    two mucky kids and a lazy mom    only joking...........would be interesting to see how other people celibrait christmas - excuse the spelling .

The big open windows (no curtains) was something that surprised me in Ireland. The british, Dutch and Americans do the same. don't you need any privacy?

We've been in O'mund for 26 years now and only one was spent out of O'mund in Cape Town.

We still tend to go with the traditional English Christmas lunch, roast chicken with stuffing, lamb, chicken, roast potatoes, brussel sprouts, baby carrots and peas, cauliflower with cheese sauce - the works. Every year my mom and I say that the next year we're going to either eat out or just have cheese sandwhiches - it's not much fun being stuck in a hot kitchen in the middle of summer.

We tried braaiing one Christmas and my mom reckoned it didn't seem like Christmas so the next week-end we had a "proper" Christmas lunch!

try cooking the meat the night before, and serving it with loads of salad and garlic bread etc.

You can heat it up in the oven smothered in gravy if you want a hot meal.

This was the compromise we found worked well.

Some baked puddings can also be made and frozen before the time, as well as the sauce that goes with it.

What works good for me:  I make some pies that I can just heat up in the oven again and then make some salads that keep well in the freezer like cucumber or carrot rings.

Well... for the record , I preferred the braai and draught beer on Christmas.... but that's just me....

Will be having Christmas with the in laws this year. Which means very delicious hot lunch.  The turkey and all the trimmings. My family do a mean lunch too, usually cold. Gammon, lamb, chick, tongue, corned beef. Cranberry jelly, mint jelly and horseradish. Some of the most exotic salads, waldorf with apple and nuts, spinach and bacon, loads of asparagus, olives, feta, potatoe salad with creamy mayo and egg. Starters are smoked salmon rolls stuffed with cream cheese and capers with lemon. Ending off with my mother's very tipsy trifle. - The best! and not too mention the Xmas pud with brandy custard. (hope there will be an extra little one waiting for me on Boxing day!!!)
