Years ago , a youngster returning from the Angolan Border , celebrated his few days leave back home . Round about midnight he started shooting with his R1 , in the park 15 th ave . Fortunately up in the air . Where he got the amunition is an open question . He traveled from lane to lane , every now and again opening rapid fire. The town was in panic and chaos , because there was a strike by the Ovambo's going as well . Eventually Big Dirk stopped him near 3rd Ave . I seem to remember that it was one of the Lisser boys . If not , then please forgive me for my failing memory . As far as I know the youngster was sent to Windhoek , and was sentenced for shooting in a built up area , using a army rifle , and amunition  .

I stayed with Albert in Bellville a while when he worked at lobster Pot and he never spoke about it. I knew Albert , John and Uncle Luke Lisser very well just before he passed away in Protea Hoogte staying with he's eldest son , the name has just begonst me now , but they were a great family. The eldest son was an lectrician, John was a mineblaster and he unfortunatley got himself fatally wounded and Albert the youngest died in a car accident just after getting married and having a child. Uncle Luke also passed away several years ago.Miss the guys.

I spoke to Richard about this and it was NOT one of the Lisser's. He did tell me the name but it escapes me now.
@ Julian...the John you refer to must be Paul.   The eldest son was Erwin then came Paul who was killed in the blasting incident then Albert who as you mention was killed in a car accident. Erwin is married to Debbie Biccard/Oppermans sister "Netta".

 Hello folks
This brings back a memory when Kevin and I first moved to Oranjemund.  In July 1979 suddenly one night, we heard gunfire.  We immediately thought that a party nearby was getting out of hand and conswidered diving under the bed but decided to listen what was going on.  We were later told, possibly gossip, that it was the chef who had been found naked on the church roof with a rifle trying to shoot down Skylab.  The USA tried to land Skylab 1,300 km south east of Capetown but bits of it actually landed near Perth in Western Austalia.

@Malcolm, there is your next book broer, Tales of a Mining Town, Gee, Armed Naked Chef's on roofs, Suicides and mass wheelbarrow theft....... the tales are endless..... start a topic , let the folk add their tales and you will have your book.....

Hi Mike

I'm getting more and more tempted to try and collate all the town stuff, massage it a bit, get other tales from forum members and put it into a book.  Perhaps next year, once I've finalised this new book (which is becoming bigger than Ben Hur) and gotten it out of the way.
The only problem is, no-one will believe it.

So we'll see . . . .

G van Schalkwyk , very active gunclub member , who lived in outer crescent , told me that he and a friend got on top of his garage roof with their double bore shotguns , just searching for the little flame from the shooters gun . But there was also an incedent where some one was naked on a roof . If you mix the two stories ?
May be that is what reminded Linda of some one on the roof shooting at the moon or.. a satelite.

Reminds me of the time when there was a advert in the weekly bullitin " If you lost your trousers , and purse full of money in its pocket . please fetch it at the Landrost office . "

A very very vague memory about this shooting that Hennie mentioned, is in my head, but I can't remember who was involved and what the outcome was.  I do remember another incident where some boys took aim at a house across the street somewhere in 11th ave  -  with airguns and let loose like in a John Wayne movie.  Unfortunate for them they were shooting at a window and inside was a woman and a baby.  She called up my dad   -  he fetched the boys (minor children at that stage) took them down to the police station, called their parents to come and fetch them.  (How come I think Steven Hockney was involved in this ....  ????  can't rember to well)
Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier. Friendship is a sheltering tree.

To be clever enough to get a great deal of money, one must be stupid enough to want it.

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of other cannot keep it from themselves.
