"Cape Town – A man believed to be a South African expatriate was shot on Saturday on a popular tourist strip in Australia, The Herald Sun reported on Monday.

According to the newspaper and other media in the country, residents in Gold Coast are now fearing a sniper may be on the loose after other gun-related crimes at the weekend.

The man had apparently moved to Australia after having been a victim of crime in South Africa, Australia's Courier Mail wrote on Monday.

The South African expat was apparently walking with his wife, teenage children and baby daughter, plus four other relatives, on a street on Surfers Paradise Esplanade when he was shot.

It is believed the shot came from a high-rise rooftop on the popular tourist strip.

The 42-year-old victim, from Carrara, was wounded in the shoulder.

Two shots were fired from a block of beachfront flats sending bystanders into a panic.People fled as police in bulletproof vests swarmed the area. The victim huddled behind a toilet block until help arrived, The Herald reported.

One witness with a knowledge of firearms told the newspaper he believed the weapon to be a .45 calibre handgun.

'Second shot purposeful'

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said there was a delay between shots.

"That made me more conscious of what was going on, because it ruled out being a car backfire," he said.

"To me, a second shot after a delay makes it more of a purposeful shot.

"To hit someone from that height with that gun, it must have been a fluke."

After entering his arm the bullet lodged in the victim's torso. The man was last night in a serious but stable condition in Gold Coast Hospital.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on the Gold Coast, a man driving a dark-coloured BMW opened fire on a car travelling on a highway, missing the occupants but showering a 23-year-old woman with broken glass.

Shootings possibly linked

Police said the shot came after the BMW had tail-gated a blue Holden Commodore for a period.

The woman and the 27-year-old driver of the car said they did not know the BMW driver, who was described as being in his late 20s and of European appearance with olive skin, a skinny build and dark hair in a bun or ponytail.

Police did not rule out the possibility the two shootings could be linked, although they involved different weapons.

In a third incident, officers say a number of shots were fired into an unoccupied vehicle at Bundall overnight.

Teens escape attempted robbery

No-one was injured.

Meanwhile, two teenage boys were bound and threatened with a gun during a home invasion on the Gold Coast on Monday.

A resident in a suburb called Upper Coomera said his 16-year-old son and a friend were at home when the armed man entered the property.

He says one of the boys escaped and phoned police from a neighbouring property. "

Yes Michael!  I did see this on the news last night, its a bit frightening as they mentioned Upper Coomera and that's were my niece and the five little one's live. They are quite safe though they live in a gated estate. I used to own a firearm but the Government after the Port Arther massacre were 35 Innocent people were murdered and another 21 wounded, had a ban on firearm licences. Farmers 'etc' and other groups that could prove they needed a weapon were excluded from the ban.

"Gated Estate" ? I thought Australia was a safe place to live?

OZ is still a safe place to live...............that's if you disregard the occasional massacre and body dumping in the NSW  state forests. There are only 20 million here. I have been known to go out and not see a single kangaroo or crocodile for at leased an hour .........................but the muggins!  they are normal day occurrence's.....................................................
