Since when did they drop the "c" in Affenrucken? It is a German word meaning, I think, Monkey (or ape or baboon) Ridge. Can we get some input on this from Georg?

Affenrücken with Umlaut

The Ü is pronounced like the U in afrikaans

It Means it is the back of an Ape, i gues a small hill in that shape

So in english Apes Back

I remember one of the happiest "waiters" - for want of a more polically correct name - was Bob - Bob who later was in the "mess" in Oranjemund.  Around the time of John Mac, Ronnie Potgieter, Jerry Howsten (sp). Bob - Bob used to walk around with a white cloth on his arm and ask people seated what they would like to eat.  Very professional he was.

During my stay in 75/76 in the SQ there we had a chef with the name of Rene....Belgian chap. He used to write the menu on a chalkboard, only to find us having wiped it and "Braai" inserted! He happily obliged ....more than once!

Derick de Bruin

I remember Rene, he arrived at Affies when Ben van Etten left. Small bloke, ran into him again at the Lesotho Holliday Inn when I worked for Keith Whitelock in Letseng-la-terrai.

Yo John, you have brought back good memories of Bob, I remember him very well too. He always made sure that you were fed and happy.

Good Man, that Keith Whitelock,
Back in the day, all the knobs in Oranjemund drank Castle lager, sucking up to the bigger knob above them...anyhow, along came , the peoples GM, one Keith Whitelock..... went to knob functions in Jeans , Takkies, and a tie.... much to the astoshiment of all the Hoovers..... anyhow, Keith only drank the finest Namibian Tafel Lager......  when the rest of the knobs saw this, the castle drinking days came to an abrupt end all the hoovers moved over to Tafel Lager....

I felt redeemed, as I drank Tafel , a bad habit I had aquired in WHK, anyhow, the days of all those prats telling me that I was drinking recycled piss came to an end...

Thanks Keith....
