"While there had been much excitement regarding diamonds on the Southern side of the mouth (Alexander Bay), it was approximately 1928 that prospecting got under way north of the river, and in January 1935 operations, on a minor scale, began in "G" area. By 1936 rough buildings had been established and marked the inauspicious beginnings of a settlement called Orange River Mouth (actually references to this name date back to 1930). In 1940 the "River" was dropped and it became affectionately known as "

Hi Mike!

I apologise for not answering your query, but this is the first time I've read this topic! According to "Diamond Beachers" Oranjemund became official in April 1951! (Please don't ask for the day!)

Ricky Barron (RIP)

I should have mentioned that to complement your opening paragraph - " The name Orange River Mouth was officialy adopted in 1930. In 1940 the "River" was dropped and our village became affectionately known as Orange Mouth (as it still was when my parents arrived in 1950/51)". So I'm afraid (as per my earlier post) the name "Oranjemund" became official in April 1951 and will be 60 next month (a good retirement age?)

Thanks for that Ricky....... interesting nevertheless ...
