If I could teleport myself ...

If you had the power to teleport yourself to a specific spot in Oranjemund, where would that be and why? We are all very nostalgic about that great little town where we grew up and the memories we have are memories that only Oranjemunders and ex-Oranjemunders can share and appreciate. When I struggle to sleep at night, I always picture myself in Oranjemund. Invariably I start my 'journey' in 3rd avenue. From there I re-live the days where I would ride my little bike to school, to the shopping centre, to the Saturday afternoon movie, to the pool and Cora's cafe, etc. Within a few minutes, my mind is clear of all work and stress related things, and I am relaxed.

So if I had to choose THE spot where I would teleport myself, it would be the sand road between 2nd and 3rd avenues, a place where we spent so many hours just being kids and where I taught my sister how to ride a bike ...

Just like you, if I had a choice where I would like to be teleported to (except for the planet I fell from originally), it would also be to the house I grew up in.  So many memories, learning experiences and happy times associated with that spot on the globe!
So... it will have to be E10/11!  Probably the front garden, where my tree with tree-house was, or even the smooth tarred road in front of the house, where we spent hours playing marbles, kites, tops, hopscotch, cycling-track marked out with desert roses, kleilat, etc. etc....

Ok! I still live here, so it don't count much, but back in the 70's, I was friends with a guy called Steven Stubbings, the mine had just finished building those new houses on the east side of town, where Pigsville use to be..... Parks and Gardens had planted an entire row of tree's on the eastern side of the houses against the desert, to serve as a windbreak..... anyhow, Steven and I found a water tap, not attached to anything, just hidden by the young tree's, ...when you turned the tap on...the water would flow east into the desert...... this made a river, where for months Steven and I would head to after school and build houses, roads and dams with our new found river.....

Of late, I often think about those desert days!

Isn't it funny to see how different our childhood souvenirs are to today's kids. They would think back to their games consoles, blackberry, iPhones, etc. For us it's all about tree houses, man-made or should I say boy-made rivers, dens, tok-tokkie ... aw, that was life ...!

I used to gatherd a lot of kids to walk the dumps on a Sunday late afternoon ,  or play in the parks and just enjoy ourselves

I visit Oranjemund in dream state whenever I am of troubled mind cos that was the one place  that life was uncomplicated  and carefree ,, not that this cut and thrust  world I live  in is bad .. just  part of me misses  the  carefree space .. so yes i do get " teleported  in dream state"   many I am of troubled mind ...

Gosh... there are many different places for different stages of my life in O'mund. My primary school years would be that same stretch of tar road as Berties in 11th Ave, the trees that boarded the new "East" section of town (back then) and the 12th Ave park. My teenage years would be the "Bop Sessions' or "Youth Club" as it was known, Cora's Cafe,the beach....that big...well it seemed big back then...dune behind the yacht club and the Lissers pondock. Then the cricket club where I met Stephen and my very first home  as a married women, 37/1st Ave where I brought my first child Mandy home to.

The art class at school -  for some reason I always remember the art class and the things that were put up on the wall and how creative we got there.  The 1st ave trees, the dens we built and the Tarzan ropes we hung from the trees and all the fun we had there.  Athletics  -  I loved it and still do -  the spirit that was between the teams.  The tennis courts  - besides playing tennis there, we used to go rollerscating on the courts.  The area between the golf club and the mouth - we used to swim and row there and braai.  Our 63/1st ave braai pondok  -  many many many braais were held there.   The park on the end of town just as you left town to go towards the mine.
