Hi Mike,
for info - we did offer to assist with data (either from HR or Security records) to proof residence, but apparently the Act clearly stipulates that it may only be done via tax, water, electricity or phone accounts.

Riaan

Thanks for that Riaan, makes that a lot clearer to us locals....

I noticed a strategy that the "big" party has going at the registration point in the rec club hall, they are taking shifts and ensure that one of their members is always available with his voting card to "vouch" for all the other members of the party who do not have proof of having lived in the town for the last year.... anyone else notice this?

For what it's worth, i ain;t a big supporter of either the SWAPO or RDP , but I don't like to see the ruling party get a huge landslide majority and then claiming that it was democracy in action, rather see a more balanced democracy..... but the best would be to a see a Taxpayers association take control of the running of the town in 5 years time.... leave the politics for National level......

Just my 2 cents....

Mike,
do you know if there are any independent candidates?

eligible voter means those that  are paying their rates and taxes and are up to  date , thats my take ,, representation by taxation ...
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .

@Riaan, No not at this stage, it was discussed between certain like minded folk, but it seems at this stage it would be foolish to embark on an independent candidate as it is thought that it would just split the opposition vote....

It was pointed out that it would be extremely difficult for an independent to stand at this stage as the masses do not understand what the vote is actually about and will just vote along traditional party lines.....

At this stage, the aim would be to prevent one party from gaining all 7 seats on the council.... this would be undemocratic and would allow meetings to be held behind closed doors.... hence the reason why it is imperative to get at least one opposition into the council....

On a side note, a prominent politician who was one of the main forces that got the proclamation on the road, will not be standing for a position on the council.... He has too many other business interests to attend to....

I have however heard of one person who is still contemplating to stand as an independent.... his reasoning is, that there are elements that would usually vote for the ruling party, but are fed up with all the corruption one hears from other local authorities..... but cannot force themselves to vote for the official opposition.... hence they would back an independent....

Watch all the sheep toe the line, when the "Big guns " come to town......
