Gagarin's Vostok spacecraft

This is a vector image I stumbled across today illustrating Gagarin's flight in 1961 with short strapline factoids about the space adventure beginning way back in 1949 with some miggies (fruit flies) being shot aloft by the Americans.

It is really interesting to see the assembly of Gagrin's Vostok craft. It resembles another craft the Soviets built but never got to use.

Even more interesting to note is the use of strap-on booster rockets at the very outset of the Soviet's space programme. The Americans would only get to use this innovation in 1981 with the first flight of the Shuttle  – 20 years after man's first flight in space.
