I see that someone in Oranjemund has come up with a novel way of contributing to the use of energy saving lights............. When the street lights no longer work, THEY ARE JUST NOT REPAIRED.

I would estimate that approx. 25% of the street lights in the town have either been switched off or are just faulty, not like it was in my time, when the lights were checked on a weekly basis.

What about the safety and is this not adding to the increase in the crime in the town?

A lot of towns in the UK are switching of the street lights at 1am, Trying to save money. I dont know why they dont install solar lights? Might be a bit more initially but surely it would save in the long run?
I notice that our council tax does not reflect the savings they make on the lights. ThatStinks2

I walk home from work down the long alley in 7th ave.... due to all the lights being out along 7th avenue.... the alley is now in pitch darkness.... I guess my way home, but mark my words, one day you are gonna read about how I got stabbed in the chest by a gemsbok, twice last year I encountered the beast sleeping in the alley..... lucky for me the lights still worked back then.....

Why is the town not investing in energy saving lights ,, the initial outlay negated by the slow drain of things left on,, I have  been on the drive for years ,, firstly CFL's , pity they dont last as they  should due to ESKOMS power fluctations , it shortens their lifespan by a lot mm now done all my outside night lighting in LED ,, a further long drain saving ,, converted the shop outside to LED as well can leave them on with impunity as they draw nada for the output ,, now awaiting the arrival of dimmable LED's for the  inside of the shop ,, again an investment but I dont care ,, consider it from  40 to 100 Watt per light incandescent  down  to  5 - 14 watt for LED ,, down  to  2 to 5 watt for LED ,, and yes they supposed to not be so sensitive to voltage fluctuation ,, long term drain ,, a huge saving ,,, and further ,, O'mund sunny  a hell of  a lot of the time ,, why no solar heating incentive program ?? its a good viable and proven saving ,,, ?? soo simple but not graspable  by folk that work in the filling  in of blocks instead of thinking out of the box ,,

Another question is ,, I give a simile  , in our factory ,, lights are forever going on the blink , yet staff do not notice it  till  its dark , then they complain  at a safety meeting  ( ie  they delegate the problem upwards )  yet all they  have to do is fill in a job card and take ownership of the " problem ",,  methinks many of the residents  wont care till the town is  in darkness  , then they will complain  as they regard  it as their " right '  to complain about uncaring  places of employment or  service providers ..I say no more ,, see enough  of  it  " blind  to issue till its totally so big " ..
It requires constant prodding by folk that care , and never give up ,, I have a simple way of dealing with our city ( that actually does a reasonable job of getting things done ,, i take a picture of the problem and send it   for attention .. normally gets dealt with pronto ...

Energy saving seems to be world wide I know here in OZ our electricity prices are continuously increasing on top of this there was a Carbon Tax introduced this month but to be fair the government has given tax breaks to help with the increases. I have an old fridge in the garage which came use full in the Summer for soft drinks and dog food, my youngest son (an electrician) has told me on many occasions to dump it as it would be costing a fair bit to operate. It's Winter here so decided to switch it off for the three months billing period, I was amazed at the $90 saving on the bill the fridge it's on eBay..... image061

Spoke to two chaps yesterday out the back of the SPAR, they were driving a cherry picker, but not the usual one. Still a NAMDEB Vehicle nevertheless...... They had just started to repair all the bad lights, starting from checkpoint side...... this job is gonna take these guys at least two months.... let there be light and there was light......
