On a recent visit up to us in Oranjemund, my father in law, one Mike Voden brought something special for me to scan. He was playing bowls down at Gordon's Bay when he got talking to a chap who handed his late father's (in law?, Mike V can fill in the details)  photo album. Here are some nice snaps of Oranjemund from those early years, note the fashions down at the club back in the day.... some snaps may not have reference to all of you, but for me, it's nice to see how a building or garden looked like back in the formative years...

Thanks "Pops"

Can anyone confirm any of the names  in the snap with all the ol' gals? We are not too sure if this is an Oranjemund related snap or not.....

The other snap for comment, was this taken in the St. Annes Catholic shurch?

.Many of you out there have these "historical" albums tucked away in a box somewhere.... do something about it.... don't leave it till you're gone and those that follow just dump "our" memories...

Thanks again to Mike V.... who took the time and effort to bring me this album...

I recall The Gordons , they lived  in the same road as the shopping center and the cinema ,, if one looks at the cinema  from the front  to the left  was a parking lot ( dont know it its still so )  they stayed in the first house abutting the parking lot  ...
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .

Pic shows how gardens began in Omund. First the sieve, background with heaps of gravel around it. Remove all rocks and stones, replace soil, add guano (collected from under the power poles in the desert) and manure, delivered monthly from Beauvallon. Mix well, plant, water, nurture and the rest is history.

Mike Voden (RIP)

One day, that son in law will get the story correct, only kidding Mike A.

The photo album was handed to me by Alex Wentzel, another member of the Gordon's Bay Bowling Club, whose wife Jackie knew we were from Oranjemund and on a couple of occasions referred that her uncle, a stone mason / bricklayer by the name of Dave Gordon worked there in the sixties and that her brother had a photo album with a newspaper cut out mentioning the town of Oranjemund.

Whilst looking through this album, I realised that there was more than just a cut out, in fact quite a few (as you can see by Mike's hard work) photo's of houses and clubs in and around Oranjemund from the sixties era.

Thanks to Jackie and Alex for the loan of your family album........
