sh*t this site gets into your head, had a look through the old newsletters and found pictures of myself in the tennis team, with Mark Swanepoel.  Pictures of soccer boys, Chris, Gary and Kevin. Lynette doing gymnastics.
Vivienne did have calipers, I last saw her during high school, she went to Fairview in Tablebay.
Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to escape Mrs Castle, in Sub B. So no we weren't in class together that year.

I think I went on to be in Mrs Wilson's class, Mrs Coffin, don't have any names of faces after that.

I do remember a Afrikaans teacher(ST5), had a moustache, who used to walk on desks and had a cane covered in insulatation tape stripped. I think I even remember him picking a desk up with someone sitting in it.
Boys and girls were removed from the class and belted outside.  We were then given 5 minutes to walk around before coming back into class.
I was whacked on the open palm of my hand a few times.
Hi Barb.
Wher did you look into the bullitin? Was that online? I'm interested.

Hey Barbara,
I had Mrs.Castle for math's, and possibly another subject, but she wasn't my home teacher. I also had Mrs.Coffin at some stage, and Mrs.Wilson. There were always two English and two Afrikaans classes for each standard, so I'm guessing that we must have been in the opposing classes in the same standard. I am pretty certain that you and Margaret, or just yourself shared at least some subjects with me. That Afrikaans teacher, sounds like  Mr.Esterhuizen or Mr.Koch?
Can you remember if you were naughty, you were told to stand outside the class? This was almost as bad as getting a hiding, because if Dr.Venter or Mr Dickinson saw you standing outside, you were marched off to the office and promptly dealt with anyway. You would just stand there with your fingers crossed, and hope that you wouldn't be spotted. There was always that 50/50 chance.Real mind games stuff.

mr Esterhuizen was our PT teacher. Blond fellow. His pal was the Afrikaans with dark hair and moustache. Can't remember his name. i remember several pupils having black and blue legs the size of his gisant hands from his hitting. Took long brefore sdomeone dealt with the two of them.
Esterhuizen would even hit everybody in the class if he couldn't make out who wass naughty. Methods usualy used in the army or in prison.

His classroom the room closest to the cycle stand. (or what's it called in english) You know the std 5 classes. Next to Mr. Dickinsons class. he gave us maths.

Michael, who do you think the other guy might be called that I meant? I think he had a Dutch name. Koch sounds to German.

Remember Mr Dickinson loved teaching maths with the help of an overhead projector and regularly sprayed and we would watch the bubble of spit on the screen? He was my maths teacher in 1975, Mr Heunis was my afrikaans teacher, Mr Zandhuis biology and science. Mrs O'Brian was the english teacher. I remember her hitting someone on the head with a bible. She was also in charge of the Oppenheimer singing for sports day. My sister and I were cheerleaders together 1974 and 1975. Mrs O'Brian used to conduct us with a lot of arm waving. Remember the talk she used to give us girls when we started std 5. We really had excellent, dedicated teachers. I loved growing up in Oranjemund, the only thing I didn't like was how class consious it was. The engineers etc had better houses, cars etc compared to the artisans. Always felt a bit like their children looked down on us. Did anyone else feel like that, or am I just imagining it?

Sorry Georg, I cannot help, we had a Mr Bergh, liked to klap  you between the shoulder blades when you were'nt watching, Mr Cloete would moer you with the white pointer stick, the woodwork teacher also moered you with a plank, Mr Ferreira liked to squeeze your neck until you fainted, Juffrou Williams could pinch your shoulders till you cried..... COme to think of it , most of those teachers had a problem with corporal punishment.... no wonder most of us drink so much these days.....    BierSuip

And Florrie, I agree with you, that was the one downside of Oranjemund, the Paterson grading kept people apart..... mine mentality......

Anyone remember the auditorium at OPS and the educational "films" we watched? The guy who did the "commentary" was so boring, would put us all to sleep.  We would all emerge squeezing our eyes tight for the light when we led out back to class. Even at school everyone would race of the back row!

Michael Alexander

I do, what was the name of the cat in those traffic films we had to watch, and zappit in a Zibbi!

Yes Mike, I think you are right about reason for our excessive drinking. Those teachers were wicked.  Very few actually treated us like human beings. Must stay I didnt like any of the male teachers except for Zandie and Mr Dickenson. Weirdo's! We shouldve sent them the therapy bills!
