Now that's an excellent question ... my dad has loads of Super 8 movies and we'd love to put them on DVD. Georg, your expert advice is needed  pls

I took my dad's collection down to CPT a few years back, but they wanted to charge me a kings ransom, so i left them... I thought about taking my digicam and recording the things whilst I played them back on the lounge wall.....

We also tried recording them but the image and sound quality was really poor. I checked online and found companies in the UK and the US that could do it, but as you say, it costs a fortune.

Picture and old 8 mm to DVD

I have done that yes, some of it can bee seen in the net

Pictures is best with scanning

Slides can be scanned ....but....you need a good scanner for that

I built a concoction to take photographs of slides directly.

Or project with slide projector to white surface

Or see videos version 4

A cardboard box with a hole on top to fit the slide, front side of the box is open and layd out with aluminium foil to reflect the incoming light. Then with macro mode i take pictures. See Oklahoma pics, they are done that way.

Thats now digital picture of slide.

8 mm films can be done as Mike said , not such good quality i know.
I tried many ways.

1) Project on wall

2) Project on white Paper

3) Project on a mirror that leads the pic again to the rear of a transparent white paper, record from the front.
could also be done direct with rear projection but will be mirrored, thats the best quality

4) I bought a gadget, project the video in to it, it reprojects the video again ( to reverse the mirror effect) on to a small screen. Put the cam in macro mode to that small screen. Voila thats it.

Now to how to get it the DVD

Many ways to do that. Depends on what programm you have........

I have differnet ones. To make it simple with an available prog. in XP use movie maker

Movie maker can import videos and pictures. Also some transition effects are available

When all is put together the film can be rendered with added sound

Now the question in what format to render it.

All the formats will run on the pc and many in the internet

Which one will run on your normal DVD player depends on the capbility of the player

Best is to test a DVD and run it with different formats on you TV DVD Player

Now how do i do it ???

I assemble video in Pinnacle Studio with combined video and pictures. That is rendered with sound and comment in the following type.

MPG runs on TV video player uses relativ little space ( 2 hrs / disk)

Full DVD is 1 hr per Disk that can be rendered to that format in Pinnacle

Or i use the rendered MPG and import it to Power producer. Here i make full DVD quality

I am sure i have confused you all now. But thats what i do plus more to load up to the net

If i can help the individual, talk to me, possibly on skype so i can asses what you have and make an instruction Blog for that

Its a special field and must be done step by step

Now here a link to an old 8 mm Film from the mine

That was done with ( see above 8 mm films version 4) with that gadget)

Unfortunately Skype is blocked in the UAE by the local telecommunications company who monopolizes the market. When you consider that 80% of the population here is foreign, they're making a hell of a lot of money out of us.
