All I  remember was the story of Mrs Whatley .. a  new  dominee had arrived in town .. the Whatleys were one of those   english/ afrikaans families both languages being spoken fluently in the home .. One of  the aunties from the church was going from door to door making  collection to fill   the  new  dominees  pantry etc etc .. upon knocking at the Whatleys door she got short  shrift  form  Mrs Whatley who sent her on her way  with  the  comment  "Hy is  'n gewone mens net  soos  ons , en  ons  moes  ons  eie spens volmaak  toe  ons hier gekom  het , hy  kan  maar  die  seflde  doen"  I  recall  a  revernd Mc Crystal ( under  correction  here  on  name  and  think  he  was  methodist ) he stayed in 3rd avenue .. used to  hold  these  slide shows at his  home  to  discourage  drug  use  among  the  teens ...  the  one  song  played to  images of  goulish looking  drug  raddled  creatures  was  '  puff the  magic  dragon '  not  that  we  took  too much  notice ...

Back in the late 60's the Dominee lived at E1/11.   We were at E5/11 then.

idontknow  where the dominee lived.  I was a good girl   :ciupa1:   -  so I did'nt need to go to his house for a repremanding about my sins.    shooter

:emot19_2:  Some or other joker called the police chaplan in Keetmanshoop when I was stationed there - told him to speak to me about my drinking habbits (apparently I had finished a bottle of red wine all by myself, that I bribed off the diaken bloke who came to collect money for the church, and I never offered a sip to anyone else).  Told the dominee he could come see me at my house, but he must remember to bring a bottle of wine with, so we can discuss the problem.  Still waiting for him to show.
Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier. Friendship is a sheltering tree.

Yes Sandy I remember that methodist minister and "Puff the Magic Dragon", he had a show at the Watson's house (Peter, Bernadene and Shirley Watson) in the 70s.

"Puff the Magic Gragon" in those days was a childs song, a name for a gun ship that the yanks used in th Vietnam war to rain hell fire down on the vietcong and a heroin pipe used by the yank soldiers to get out of the bad reality of the vietnam war. Therefore "Puff the Magic Dragon" was seen as drug related in the 70s.

Yes Diana the dominees in the 70s stayed in 11th - was there not a case of a dominee being transfered because of a ladies department incident?

I don't know about this underwear incident, but I do know that the domoni lived next door to us in 4th avenue
he had some parties/braai's were the squeezebox and loud afrikaans songs not church hymns were played late into the night.
His wife would allows send a plate of warm delicious koeksisters to our house when she was cooking them.
My father was a self confessed atheist so they never spoke to one another, but I liked the koeksisters and would be gracious to the whole family at all times.
