I remember that one - geez, what kid growing up in the 60's/70's doesn't.  I seem to have a memory of Jeremy Taylor coming to O'mund and having a show in the movie house - Sandy, help me out here?  I know Max Collie, the hypnotist used to come up as well and have shows there.

This morning , on the morning shift in the forum, I noticed that Patricia used the words Ag, Man...and I thought... gee thats amazing... how many of you ex Oranjemunders that left for overseas many many years back, still use Afrikaans/South African words even though you no longer live out here.... and suddenly when I looked at the words Ah, Man... The Song by Jeremy Taylor just popped into my head... It's a Strange Strange world we live in MAster Jack... gee, it's amazing how I do that.....

that sure was a blast from the past. I actually tought my kids that song. I also use afrikaans words and people here look at me in shock as they don't know what i am saying. I still use Ag man.  Only today i went into a shop and asked for cigarettes the guy at the counter said to me "you are far from home" he also came from SA and was amazed that i still had my accent. Something i will never use. Dont want to talk like these brits up north.

There are some Afrikaans words that just describe things better than in any other language (e.g. durmekaar, voetsek, bliksem ... not sure about the sspelling though). I have a few SA friends here in Dubai, so I often get to speak Afrikaans. When I'm back in France with my family, we always speak a mixture of French, English and Afrikaans.

Maybe I'm just a wee bit biased, but it's the Afrikaans swearwords that just seem better than in English..... Anyone, except Michele, know what the Afrikaans word is for housewife?  When I give the answer, you won't believe it....
