Try what John Vorster said to Helen Suzman in Parliament  one  day  when  she  as  the  sole  representative of opposition ( she to this day remains one of  my heriones )  made comment ....  " Vrou gaan  terug  kombuis  toe"  he  was  obviously a great  preponent  of  the  barefoot pregnant and in  the  kitchen  brigade and  could  not  stand seeing opposition never  mind  a  feisty woman  who was  for  years  prepared to stand alone  for  years in this  all male dark suited wearing Homberg hats club  and " dare' to challenge  them . My Mom had the  privelege of  being in  her company many times and was a great inspiration to her .. there  is  a  pic amongst many with  the  two of  them together ,, I  will post it  when I  find it ...

Sandy, it's a Scottish thing, my mother also had a mind of her own, and did'nt stand back for nobody... sometimes her extrovert character could be a little awkward for us kids....

I  enjoyed  my  Moms  especially  in her latter  years when all kids  grown  up  she  became the  ultimate rebel joined the left wing   really  challenged authority putting  her  safety at risk , created  lots of  controversy ... my  privelege was  standing  by  her and  saying " hey  you  have  a  second  chance at teenage ,being  in  love and  challenging  the  world  all over again .. go  for  it" indeed she did  .. it made  my  heart  glad ..

Talking  about  the  left  wing   and  Moms  involvement  ..  caused  much  consternation  among family  and  friends  alike ( dont  forget  this  was  the  80's  and  early  90's  )  pulled  up  some  scans I  did  ages  ago . one  with  The  venerable Helen Suzman . another  with Eddie  and  Nelson  Mandela at  a   working  breakfast   at  klein  constantia  some  time after  the  old  man  was  released  ...  and  one  when  The  old  man  and Graca  came  to  visit  Mom  just  after she  had  her  big  cancer op ...

Unfortunately  no ...  whenever  he  visited or  met  with  Mom and Ed  it  was  quietly and  unannounced ...   I  would  just  be  casually  told  Oh  the  " old  man  visited  the  other day "  Ed  and  He  still have  the odd  meeting ...  Eddie  not  very  popular  in  the  ruling  " elite" as  he   has  good  values  and  tells  the  truth  and would  I  dare  say  I  think  he  is  possibly  a slightly  disapointed  person  because  all  he  sees  is  the  years  he  fought  and  spent  on Robben  eiland   are  wasted  on  a  bunch of  self  enriching  corrupt  and  uncaring   bunch  of  power  hungry  politicians  ...

That's the opinion I wanted to hear. To me Mandela is one of the great heros of the 20th centuary. he taught us all how you can still stand up after so many years and look a man in his face that hurt him without hate but seeking fairness. Pity his spirit doesn't carry in SA.
Gorbatchow has the same destiny.

Mandela needed to be 20 years younger.... it makes one very angry to see how the rest of the "oppressed" leaders are jumping aboard the gravy train...not to say that the same thing never occurred when the Boere were all jumping aboard the Gravy ossewa.....

just my 2 cents.....

Thats what happens  when  people  think  they are untouchable and dont have to answer ,, I in fact ahve this  horrible sneaking suspicion that currently  a lack of conscience , morals , basic human decency is  actually condoned and encouraged  so as to   turn the populace into never mind   morons thereby allowing them to carry on with their  dishonest ways ..  The previous    regime  as  they  are  so  fondly  refered  by  the  current  regime   tried to whip folk up  into  a  sense  of  patriotism to  the  point  that  they would  not question   anything  that  was going on ??  same  goal . hold  onto  power   and  carry  on  entitling   themselves and cronies ..  my 2$  worth ...
And  yes  the  old  gentleman  needed  to  be  at last  20  years  younger  it would  ahve  made  one hell of  a  difference ..

I reckon the same corruption occurs all over the world, and I'm not doing American Bashing, but there entire system of government stinks...something is rotten with the way they do their politics, yet they point fingers to every other country in the world....... That young country was founded on good strong judgement and morals......somewhere they lost sight of the lighthouse..... do yourselfs a favour...goto the video shop and hire a DVD called .... "Who Killed the Electric Car...."

It's still living in Africa, exciting, and the majority of people are nice folk...it's just those nutters that make up that 5% of all population groups that wreck it for the rest of us... Gee..... raping babies and killing a pensioner for 50 bucks... I am in favour of the Death Penalty in all cases were the crime can be proven beyond any reasonable doubt... I am even in favour of having the hanging in Public...On the parade in front of City Hall, every Friday at 17h00....live on TV..... then watch how the crime wave subsides....

Thats my 2 cents and a few more thrown in for good luck..... anyone want to debate?

No debate from me, I agree absolutely.  Never mind watching on telly I'd pack my cooler box and head on down to City Hall.  Just about every week you read in the paper about a 4yr old,boy or girl going missing only to be found murdered and raped. What happens about it........zilch.
