From what I can make out these charts are just to far south  -  they are south of the Orange river mouth (I don't read or speak Portugese.... ) and the wreck is on a location just north of the Orange river.

Alexandre  -  if I'm wrong  -  could you pinpoint the location of the Orange river mouth on one of those charts for us please.

The only name I can pick up that is still around today, is Cape Voltas, south of Alexander bay...marked in red...fascinating stuff, myself and wessle smit were just discussing these old type of maps yesterday...he knew of a wreck that was found inlAND IN the Kaokaveld... but not near the sea...seems the see used to be inland at one stage...

I tried here. This is presuming the blue is the Oranje. Lets see what Mike says ????

There is obviously no scale to these maps, but marked in green is more than likely Cape Fria on the Skelenton coast...and I see the name Pequena between the two....bearing in mind that Luderitz was originally called Angra Pequena before Adolf and the boys turned up..... so i would say That Omund would be between Pequena and Fria...however they do not have a mighty river marked there, but then we all know that the river dams up with a large sandbar and perhaps the portuguese who drew this map did not see it, for the river mouth was closed up?

Actually,it's from Cabo Negro http://www.satelliteviews.net/cgi-bin/w.cgi?c=ao&UF=-2868915&UN=-4015079&DG=CAPE (Namibe, Angola) to Cape Town...

That is my question: where is the River Orange? I am not acquainted with the local topography, that's why is fascinating for me to follow the pros on this thread.. :)

I might say you're spot on. For instance, on this 1700 chart, there's only the Olyphant river marked, no other river up north as far as Angola.

Map 215 goes only up to Namaqualand, that is still below the Orange River and is part of the cape province

Ok..lets put some portuguese into English..Alexandre' if you could, what would the nearest description be in English for these three names.....

1) Islet Point

2) The Elevations (small mountain chain?)

3) Low lands (or Site of the shallows?)

The maps only from False Bay in cAPE tOWN  to Namibie in ANgola...what causes mass confusion here is the scale... How far inlAnd would these guys have adventured? Because on that map...only the Orange river would dissect the mountains in the hinterland.... the olifants runs parallel to the Cedarberg in the south and the kunene does intersect the Hartmansberge in the north and then shoots north into Angola ..I am therefore happy to state that according to the old names on the 1500 chart that Oranjemund lies just north of Cape Voltas, thats the big bay just south of Alexander bay with the Boegoeberg above it, that side slopped Table mountain type hill you can see form the beach from oranjemund.... So I satnd with the mark I have given, also just north of prequen is a name that looks like COnception... that is also the current day COnception Bay.... that marking Angra prequena as Luderitz..... just my 2 cents...but heck I love geography....

Ok, I have drawn a skew map of where I thing the borders of Namibia is on this chart and then named a few spots that I think may be right  -  thanks for the direction Georgswa & Alexandre & Mike.
