Expert opinion about the economy of diesel versus petrol is divided in certain quarters. I still think that over 12 months, diesel could be more economical than a petrol driven vehicle. But the jury is still out.

Today a group of North Sea oil exploration chappies went to meet the doos at Number 10 and his Darling exchequer to discuss matters such as the price reduction of fuel.

But guess what - they did not discuss fuel price reduction. They spoke investment in North Sea Oil which makes no frigging difference to the petrol pump price at my local garage today, tomorrow or even next year.

Only the groot doosie can change that and do you think he is straining at the reins to get at the crowded price reduction keyboard....?! Nope. Because why? Darling is coining it. At the current prices, the government tax % is amounting to millions and millions of GBP each day that ends up at the Treasury to be spent on financing the British armed forces staying in Iraq & Afghanistan and not on:

1. cleaning up hospitals here where if you go in you can die from the MRS bug and not from the illness you are diagnosed with
2. Providing increased pensions to all the older generation to keep starvation at bay, a roof over their heads and their dignity intact
3. Increasing the police force to prevent crime and the latest fad - stabbing youngsters to death.

No, the groot doos wants to keep the armed forces occupied fighting a war which this country should never have been involved in.

And this is a 1st world economy.....................?! Jawelnofine.

No problem Robert. I think our ability to rant is what differentiates us from the boxes residing at Nr.10 and at the Union Buildings. I think most governments, excluding the middle east, derive great income from petrol tax. I believe here in SA it's about 45% of the cost per liter that goes to the Union Buildings.

I am no economist but if the % was reduced, wouldn't it spark greater economic activity? Transportation of goods would be reduced, retail prices would fall, purchasing would increase, economy gets better, normal VAT or GST volume increases which can then be ploughed back into a country's infrastructure and thus keep the (cheaper) wheels of economics going around.

Or is this pie in the sky thinking?

Same problem here in Aus - we have nearly 40% taxes on our fuel. There is talk that the federal government wants to give a 5 cents cut on the fule prices. !!!!!!!   That a saving of about $1.50 on a tank of petrol costing $75-80. Dont know why the hell they are bothering.

@ Robert - It would definately bring down the price of consumer goods, thereby leading to a better standard of living for the majority of the population. Unfortunately, the shortfall in the state coffers will just be made up then by an increase somewhere else. What needs to happen is deregulation of the global oil price. Let each fuel supplier determine his own price. Promote some competition between the major oil companies of the world.

Sadly though, this is definately pie in the sky thinking. As long as OPEC calls the shots, we're screwed!

That is the right thinking, same discussions here.

That would mean the Gvnmt has to be more inventive, why should they, if its so easy to milk the poulation.

The prices and Tax in our country go up and up. I see the $ price doubled, no one mentions here that the value of the $ is almost only half of what it was.

The camparison.

1 $ costs 1,26 €

Now

1$ costs 0,65 €

To me that equates to paying almost half for the $ , that should balance off the crude oil price increase

Oil is paid in $ not €, in other words where is the factual price increase here in Europe

Who are then the big winners apart from Gvnmts

Now they talk about new tax again. The so called CO2 Tax

I still wait for someone to explain to me:

My car uses 8 Litres of fuel that equals about 8 kg of liquid

Yet our clever enviroment minister says that 8 L produces 12 kg of Gaz namely CO2

The Namibian Newspaper, the Economist reported last week that Tullow oil might have found oil in Namibian waters, with reserves of at least 10 Billion Barrels..needless to say their SHare price doubled...

WHen I arrived in UK mid 90's my staff at work in London was comprised of 60% SAFFERS and a couple of Zimbabweans and then as the 90's moved on, more and more SAFFERS seemed to arrive and make camp everywhere. So you could be stood at the checkout at Sainsbury's Oxford and hear the vloeking behind you. Was great to turn around and let rip back....! The shock on the faces was worth a million.
