Whoa! This brings back many memories of the day this was taken. I was in a sulk for some reason and would not stand next to Ingrid Fry and Martha de Pinto (correct?) so I went skulking off around the boats pretending to not be bothered then meandered back as the picture was being taken. I was stood close to the photographer......!!

My dad (seated extreme left immediately underneath the gun barrel) was not impressed. My mum, standing 2nd from left back row holding my baby cousin Shareen wright, was even more hacked off with me!

I have been searching for this photo for years and am so please Mike sent it in. There are so many faces there including Mr and Mrs Devlin, the Bakers, the Wrights, the Soames's , Kilbrides, Mitchells, Molloys (Bob went on to become a respected journalist with the Cape Times and the 1st person to try to surf at Oranjemund on a bespoke but wierd board) , the Dally's, Hockneys, Meads, Creedy's, Brunges....the list just goes on. I apologise if I cannot recall all the names. I do remember the faces but not the names.

It is a real treat to see this photo again after so long. Thanks Mike.

By the way - Mike and elder brother John were great yachtsmen. They were heroes to the likes of me. Mike & John always did well.

Cherry,
If you can help jog my memory again, please point me to your dad in the photo. As I said I could not recall all the names. And did you know that I was in the same class as Cecile? And also, when I see a woman wearing her hair in pigtails, I always remember your sister! She'd laugh her head off at that!

You take care of yourself ok? And point us to your dad. We have many faces but few names, so help me to recall those names.

Kindest regards

Robert

I would also like to know Cherry? I've gone blank.  Is your mom in the photo? The woman under the woman holding the baby in the top row on the left looks like her. If so that would be your dad to her left.    idontknow
The Soames you refer to Robert , would that be Doug and Silvia Solms? I was good friends with Teresa and spent a lot of time with them at the yacht club.Still trying to place you though. I recognise the faces of those you've put names to'. These are like real dinkum old O'munders.(With all due respect to all you others out there)
O.P.S -1969, Springfield Convent -1970, Holy Cross Convent-1972., Centaurus-1974
I got around.

Diana,

As I said in my originating email above, the woman back row 2nd from extreme left (as you look at the photo) holding the baby is my mother! Do you mean the lady sat on the wall directly in front of her? The man sat next to the gun on her left is Gordon Dally. His wife Shirley is seated 2nd on the left next of the lady you are maybe pointing to?

Yes that is the correct Soames's! Their first names escaped me.

Yes ma'am these are the dinkum old O'munders. These people founded the social side of Oranjemund. My uncle John (my mum's brother) was the 1st person to sail on the Pink Pan. He went on to build an Enterprise (Boooo!) whereas, my dad, Aubrey Baker and my dad's brother Philip Bruce (not in photo), built 3 Andy class yachts (Yay!!).

Mike Kilbride sailed an Enterprise too. Am I correct? I know he would have done so much better in an Andy! Or did he sail one? Dunno.

My uncle John is seated next to David Hockney (mostly obscured)  who is sat slightly diagonally to the left in front of Mary Mead (dark hair with white top) who is sat on the wall and whom David married. Mary is sat to the right as you look at the photo of Edna Molloy mom to Sinclair Molloy. See the young boy stood on one leg holding a packet, go up two people (seated) and Uncle John (the term Uncle is correctly applied due to him being a blood relation) is the ou toppie with the graying hair at his temple. David is sat next to him leaning to his left as you look at the photo.

Who is sat to the left of Mr Mead (the CDM baker) with a baby on his lap, shielding his eyes from the sun? And can anyone recall what the name is of the guy sat in front of David Hockney (on the grass verge between Ingrid and the boy stood on one leg), 'cos he was a good yachtsman too. A stalwart of the club.

Ok, my memory is not half as good as you lot but ...

Kids at the front: 1st on the left: my sister Coral; me - 4th from right
My dad: seated behind Bill Mitchell and in front of Keith Brooke
My mom: seated between Gordon & Shirley Dally

I'll send this to my mom and see if she can name any others.

(Brain too foggy today from too much wine last night!)

Some more "yachting on the pink pan" photo's i dug out - taken in the 70's.  Not good quality and out of focus, but maybe it rings a bell!  PS: Earlier posts (Robert?) mentions VW beetle - ironic - there's a yellow Beetle in the background on one of the photo's!
Oranjemund 1965-1982; 2019 and counting...

Does anyone have any memories of Omlettes on a Sunday night at the Yacht Club ?

BTW, not the same type that Mike and Michele enjoy!  swink
Don't sweat the small shit!
