This was the shop, situated next to either the old building society or travel agency building. One had a great choice of local Afrikaans craft, not to mention Kooksusters, Melktert etc, etc. Kom nou al julle Afrikaanse mense, julle sal nie hierdie plek vergeet nie!!

I remember it.  About the same time as the holiday clubs that were oraganised, where I learned macromi?

Nother better than  a good crispy syrupy koeksuster.

Yep, to the souties it was called the home industries... Got to say though, that Nicky's postings have really started to take the CAKE these days, just COOKING up whatever he can and waits to see what FLOURs. It really just makes you want to BATTER his head in though...

As Homer would say... DOUGH!!! here we go again

Michele Alexander (Voden)

CRUMBS, Nicky, Paul has BEAT us to it - guess we'll have to RISE to the occasion and WHIP his butt again! Can't be seen to be LOAFing around! I guess now I'll be the queen of TARTS!

Beware of Mike though as once the FAT hits the FIRE we'll have to move again.

As Kevin loved to say with a RYE smile "Where's my MUFFIN bru!"

I remember selling machine knitted jerseys at the Home Industries... brought in nice pocket money in those days for us homebound wives.

Yeah, Good old days. Remembered when me and mom went by,auntie Rea Wiese ( springbok ruby star Kobus Wiese's Mom) always used to give me a koeksister or a cupcake. :)

Oh no ..... We have created a monster! I guess it only adds to the SPICE of life, but if Mike finds out, he will surely GRILL us. He is probably wanting us to TURNOVER a new leaf. Will have to read up on the BINDING rules for the site. TART sounds a bit too RANCID in my opinion Michele!!! Hey Paul, you look like a bit of a BEEFCAKE in your photo ... LOL... Don't worry, I'm just taking the PITH. I guess I could be described as a bit of a CUPCAKE.

Hi Tessa,
You have just answered a question that has been bugging me for a long time. I have often wondered if Kobus Wiese was the same guy that we went to school with in O/mund. When he first appeared on the rugby scene in the early to mid nineties, I recognised him immediately, but when you go to the players' profiles on the rugby sites, they only mention the high school he attended, not the junior school. He was not born in O/mund either. I checked this out too, in hope of confirmation, but to no avail.
I worked with him during the school holidays in the O/mund retail store, as it was known back then. We used to mark the produce with prices and then restack the shelves etc.The two of us and Tony Vogel got up to a fair bit of mischief during our time in there. I won't mention names, but there was this one occasion where we locked another student in the walk in freezer room for a while. Poor oke came out and his teeth were chattering. Sies vir ons!
I can also recall him telling me that when he was very young, his Dad took him and his brother out in the desert in a Landrover or something, and it broke down miles from civilization. They either ran out of water,or had none with them. When they were eventually found, they were so dehydrated that their tongues were swollen, and he was in hospital for a while. It was a very lucky escape I think.

I remember the founder members of the tuisnywerheid were Ina van der Merwe and Rea Wiese, both ladies made the most divine goodies.

Geez Barbara, now you have got my mouth watering just thinking about a "Syrupy Koeksuster" ..... Mmmmm.

Nikki, mmm, who let the CAT out the bag,
thought I'd share with you that I managed to find some KOEKsusters and MELKTART butchershop which provides me with all things south african.

You can't have a barbi/bbq/braai without boereWORS, and castle.

I am managing to slowly cause a pavlov DOG effect whenever I come home after shopping there BILTONG is a firm favourite.

Nicky, it is the same Cobus Wiese, in fact he's been back here 3 times in the last 5 years, for various functions. He donated one of his green bok blazers to OPS and it now hangs on the wall at the school.

He has a program on TV called Over die COals, or something to that affect, he came up here last time for a presentation show in the rec club, with Balie Swart... I was'nt there, but the party in Don Esteban went onto the wee wee hours of the morning, Naked Torso's and Motorbikes..... so I'm told.... when they went to catch the plane back to JHB on Saturday morning, as he had to commentate on a live game, the cpt refused them access onto the plane until he threw up .... So, I;m told......

Mike ~ That most recent function you're referring to with Kobus Wiese, Toks van der Linde (not Balie Swart!) and Errol Tobias took place on 29 September, 2006, at the Recreation Club.  His visit prior to that was, if my memory serves me correctly, on the occasion of the Rugby Club's 50th anniversary which must have been 4 or 5 years ago.

Michael Alexander

Pete, you are indeed correct, now you see if they had been Cheetah players and not a combo of Weeepeee and Lions, then I could have told you everything about them, including their bank details.....

What does a lonely Cheetah supporter know about the wonderful game!   :-\
