My dad, Jock made a comment on those old wooden box houses from the early 40's, reckons in the 70's many of the homes in Oranjemund had a wooden porch built onto the front of them , (Rhona, like your house), Now he remembers being told back in the day, that the wood for these porches came from those original wooden box houses... anyone got anything to add to this......?

Pic 5 looks like the Power station I recall somebody telling me that the building today was extended onto the original

Pic 25 looks so much like that motor that drove the flat belt drives at South works posted on the other post and those years engraved into the window panes could I be on the right track 1946 maybe or am I dreaming

The town power station building as it stands today is definitely built in 2 sections; be it 1 part original the other built on later. I'll take another look and see if I can identify which part was built first.
I noticed this when we were still based at the power station before the "million dollar" renovations.
The floor is on 2 different levels, differing by about 2 feet. At this change in floor height the roof trusses change too. The supporting structures, pillars and beams are also different. Will try and get in there with me camera and take a few snaps.

Found one of the houses along 5th today, with one of those Porches that I mentioned earlier on....... they used to be quite common in the 70's...... but are now far and few between!

Also try 37-1st, 33-1st, 27-1st, 33-2nd(?), 29-2nd(?) Avenues... the older 2 bedroom houses.

Thanks Andy, I still need somebody to confirm the tale that these porches were actually built from the original wooden houses from the early 40's......
