Some time in the late 70's my dad claims to have seen a UFO right above the town. The story was something along the lines off:

On his way to work in the morning, dad looked up to the sky's and notice and object fairly high up which he took to being an airoplane. He thought nothing of it and went straight to work. Toward the end of the working day, one of his helpers pointed up to the sky to the object which was still there (some 7 or 8 hours later) in the same spot, his helper commented on the fact that it had just been there all day long and he wondered what it was.

Well it was far away and could not be clearly identified so dad phoned Kieth Robinson who was, besides being a blacksmith, also an exceptionally good artis and also owned a fairly powerful pair of binoculars from his days inthe merchant navy. Kieth said he's have a look.

Sometime later Kieth phoned dad and told him to come round to his house to have a look at a scetch he had made of the object. The scetch was of a flying saucer, true to the type most commonly identified with the disk on the edge, a domed top and flat bottom. Kieth maintained till the day he left town that this was no hoax and that this is what he'd seen...

Anyone else familiar with this or some similar story????

Sharon

Hi Pual, I don't remember that but I do remember my mum telling me a story of when my dad and her came out of the bioscope (movie house, not in O'mund but in Cape Town and had seen one. I thought yeah, right, but she still says it was a ufo.........

So  strange  .. I  was planning to post  one  about  the UFO sightings  around our  town ..    anyhow  seeing  as its  opened ..   here  goes .. Indeed  they  are true  .. green  stuff  and  the  good liquid  aside ... I  recall the  news  of  the sightings  in  the late 70's  I  had my  one  in the  early  70 's   could have  been 73 or  74 .. it  was  lunchtime  and  I  left  tech to  take  a  ride  in  the  desert  on  my bike   I  had  reached the  " hole "  and looked  up  and  there in  the  distance  was  this  l  flat  oval silver  object ( no  not a  hubcap )   with an  orange   coloured  circle in  the  middle   .. I  culdnt believe what  I  was  seeing  and proceeded  to   drive furiously  through  the  desert  toward  this  object  in the  sky   ..  i  got  quite  far out  .. close  to  the  barbed  wire  fence  and  then  it  suddenly  headed  out  in  the  direction  of  the  sea  in a  flash  and  I  mean  fast ..  gone ..  I  rushed  home  to  tell  my Mom .. (  first  had  her  sniffing  my  breath to  make  sure  I  was  not  drinking  during  the  day  .. had pupils  checked  in  case I was  on dope ...  She  swore me to  secrecy  saying  that people  would  think  I  was  " crazy "    only  a mothers  love could   be  blind  to  the  fact  that  I  was  possibly  a bit brain damaged  ( bless  you  Mom )   any  next  day at work  during  her  tea time  Girla  Nortje ( the lady  of  the  blue  rinse  )   walked  in  and  said  .. " guess  what  I  saw "  she recounted  her story  of   drving back  from a  womens  guild  some  or  other  church  meeting and  seeing  this object  in the  night  sky //  Auntie Girla  did  not drink  or  smoke dope  .. she rushed  home and  dragged  her husband  out  to  see this  object  ,,  there  they were on  the  front  stoep looking  at  it  when  it  whooshed  off  in  the same  manner   I  saw    ...  mom  had to  apologise  and told  the  family  .. there  were  a  few  more  sightings  in  the  next  week  and then  it  disapeared ..   Just  our  other  friends  in  the universe  seeing  how  we  doing  .. or  hey  maybe  we saved  the  world  .. they observed  the  people  in  our  town  and  said  .. " these  earth people  are  crazy .. this planet is  not worth  colonising "   and left  disapointed ..

Ok  apart from security  not  giving them  permission  to land  , dropping  of  a  child  or  two ..   or  some  people  thinking  it  was   bad  batch  of  dope .. come  on    ,, these  things  must  have been  seen  by  more people .. come  on   out  of  the woodwork  and    share you  experience ..  or are you  afraid  of  being defined as  whacky  or  a  dopehead ??

Sandy, one evening a very weeird and large object appeared on our nightcams at security, about six or seven years ago,Pete has a copy of this on tape, but nobody could verify this huge sort of round object staying on the same height in a northerly direction. No weather balloon looks like that and anyway it was far more larger than a ballon. We still have no answer to that one.... any ideas anyone?

Jeez and wouzers!  All these years security is on the lookout for thieves and smuggles amid their own residents and those who qualify as species Homo Sapien  -   turn your eyes to the skies bro's!  They're comming from outta space.  Why do you think the stars sparkle so bright at night - the bounty from CDM and NAMDEB light up their skyways to far off universes.  Should you be so lucky to be the chosen ones to whom they reveal their existence to!  Hell, I live where the biggest iron ore mine in the southern hemisphere is located, but we never get visits like that.  Now I know why.

Don't ask me what kind of poison I consume -  I have'nt ordered yet!

Yes  Dalene ..  a  big hole  in  the  ground   with iron  ore  is  not as  appealing   as  shiny  shiny  fairy  gold ..   whether people want  to  acknowledge  it  or  not  we  had  quite a  lot  of sightings  over  the  years   and  this  is  by   basically  sane  albeit  sometimes  pleasantly   disturbed  people   ...   but thats  what we oranjemunders  are  all  about  hey ??

Sandy, all was said in good humor ...........  I know there were "sightings" at some stage - my dad, Big Dirk, who maybe was the most sane crazy person that I ever knew, also mentioned something like that at some stage, but it was so long ago that I had actually forgotten about it.

Like you say - Oranjemunders are just that little bit more than extra special. ( Ja, and this big hole in the ground with it's red dust that gets into everything ..........  be glad you live where you do, even if you may feel a sense of unease because of the UFO stuff  ...... )   You know, come to think of it:  except for mad Mardgie whom everyone knew, I've never heard of any Oranjemunder who has ever been declared as "certifyable" and who had to be admitted to some or other institute.  Here in the "outside world" we cannot claim the fame to that!
