Johannesburg - A "dangerous" chemical has spilled into the Orange River in the Free State, Xhariep district disaster management said on Thursday.

"I can confirm that the incident happened yesterday and since then we have assigned a chemical company to help with it," said spokesperson Charles Chabe.

"As we speak, they are still busy cleaning up."

Chabe could not say how the spill had happened or what chemical it was.

"Its difficult to say how it happened. All we can say is that it is a very dangerous chemical."

He said the disaster management team would be meeting with members from the chemical company on Friday for feedback.

"They are compiling a report on it, so we should know more tomorrow."
