Free-Market Analysis: Australia is apparently going to be the first or one of the first countries to put a tax on "carbon." The idea that carbon dioxide, an essential building block of life, has been subject to powerful demonization by the Anglo-American power elite is testimony to the power of the Anglosphere's use of dominant social themes, the fear-based promotions that push Western middle classes to give up power and wealth to internationalist institutions. Global warming (now climate change) is a perfect example of such a meme in action.
It apparently doesn't matter that global warming has been debunked to the point where the powers-that-be had to change the very nomenclature; like so many power-elite promotions, its veracity has little to do with its implementation. We've questioned how well such memes will work in the era of the Internet because alternative information is so easily available. But what we have discovered simply by observation is that the elite is committed to these programs regardless.

Explosion in Jellyfish Numbers May Lead to Ecological Disaster, Warn Scientists

Global warming has long been blamed for the huge rise in the world's jellyfish population. But new research suggests that they, in turn, may be worsening the problem by producing more carbon than the oceans can cope with.

Dr Carol Turley, a scientist at Plymouth University's Marine Laboratory, said the research highlighted the growing problem of ocean acidification, the so-called "evil twin" of global warming. (Image: wiki commons) Research led by Rob Condon of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in the US focuses on the effect that the increasing numbers of jellyfish are having on marine bateria, which play an important role by recycling nutrients created by decaying organisms back into the food web. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, finds that while bacteria are capable of absorbing the constituent carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other chemicals given off by most fish when they die, they cannot do the same with jellyfish. The invertebrates, populating the seas in ever-increasing numbers, break down into biomass with especially high levels of carbon, which the bacteria cannot absorb well. Instead of using it to grow, the bacteria breathe it out as carbon dioxide. This means more of the gas is released into the atmosphere.

Dr Carol Turley, a scientist at Plymouth University's Marine Laboratory, said the research highlighted the growing problem of ocean acidification, the so-called "evil twin" of global warming. "Oceans have been taking up 25% of the carbon dioxide that man has produced over the last 200 years, so it's been acting as a buffer for climate change. When you add more carbon dioxide to sea water it becomes more acidic. And already that is happening at a rate that hasn't occurred in 600 million years."

The acidification of the oceans is already predicted to have such a corrosive effect that unprotected shellfish will dissolve by the middle of the century."

Condon's research also found that the spike in jellyfish numbers is also turning the marine food cycle on its head. The creatures devour huge quantities of plankton, thus depriving small fish of the food they need. "This restricts the transfer of energy up the food chain because jellyfish are not readily consumed by other predators," said Condon.

The increase in the jellyfish population has been attributed to factors including climate change, over-fishing and the runoff of agricultural fertilisers. The rise in sea temperature and the elimination of predators such as sharks and tuna has made conditions ideal, and "blooms" – when populations explode in great swarms, sparking regular panics on beaches around the world– are being reported in ever-increasing size and frequency. Last year scientists at the University of British Columbia found that global warming was causing 2,000 different jellyfish species to appear earlier each year and expanding their number.

The proliferation of jellyfish has caused problems for seaside power and desalination plants in Japan, the Middle East and Africa. The blooms are also perilous to swimmers; the effects of a jellyfish sting range across the species from painless to tingling to agony and death.

Mon Repos Beach - French for "My Rest" is located just 15kms east of Bundaberg City central. Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the Eastern Australian mainland and is one of the two largest Loggerhead turtle rookeries in the South Pacific Ocean.

Successful breeding here is critical for the survival of this endangered species. Research at Mon Repos ensures this, but the centre is also used to guide other major Queensland rookeries and is an important training centre for research program volunteers and wildlife managers from the Indo-Pacific region. Dr Col Limpus spearheaded a major research project in the 70s, tagging over 100,000 hatchlings. The 30-year research program examines reproductive and migration studies, animal surveys of nesting turtles, behavioural studies and incubation and genetic studies.

More people visit Mon Repos every year to watch nesting turtles and emerging turtle hatchlings. Although turtles nest along the entire "Turtle Coast" between Woodgate and the Town of 1770, long, isolated beaches and darkness ensure few are actually seen. Turtles are also easily disturbed which makes Mon Repos an ideal place for a chance to see these 'ancient mariners'.


Turtle Watching
To manage turtle watching at Mon Repos, the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service has implemented ticketed beach access and constructed a Visitor Centre. Here visitors can see slide shows, films and static displays and talk with the rangers and turtle volunteers. Then, if a mother turtle makes her way up the beach and starts to lay her eggs, the rangers will take groups of up to 60 visitors onto the beach to see this natural marvel.

Nesting turtles are best viewed after dark one hour before to two hours after high tide from mid November to February. Turtle hatchlings are best viewed from January until the end of March between 7pm and midnight. As turtles can nest and hatch at any time Mon Repos ranger staff cannot always guarantee a sighting. Remember - you are viewing wild animals in their natural environment! Tidal variance may mean you are walking in soft sand and in the dunes - visitors with mobility problems should speak to Rangers so that they are not "left behind' the group whilst walking on the beach.
