Saw a topic about penny and what came to mind the old video shop accross from the rec club

Michael Alexander

It was originally a comic/book swap shop, then Tommy turned it into a video den in the back section.....

It's funny you mention this today, as I was thinking of the Penny Farthing when I was in MTC today, seeing that also used to be the video shop at one stage...

Tommy and Jona Visser were the first owners of the vidio shop Penny Farthing with Philips video machines for rent . Hennie Ollewagen was the original Philips agent in Oranjemund , supplying equipment and serviced all Philips whites [kitchen appliances ] as well as video equipment - that is dishwashers , and washing machines and video machines  . I recently scrapped my Philips washing machine & Dishwasher after faithhfull service since 1975 .  Philips was first to put video on the market , Followed by Sony Betamax.
Of course the Dutch firm ,  Philips won the race with VHS as the standard , with the approx 100 mm sized CD's. Sony CD's was abaout 180 mm dia .

correction
Hennie ollewagen was the first person to put out video machines for rent to OM 's people
he then sold the busines to Tommy Visser

Stevie

Remeber how Barry Davis also used to rent Betamax tapes

Now  I may be mistaken , but  I seem to recall Penny Farthing being a second hand shop in the  70"s , next door to the old   SA permanent building society opposite the  Rec club , mmmm
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .

I thought Ozzy Woods was the first guy in town to rent out video machines, somer in a suitcase....

That was my thought as well.  I remember some guy renting out video machines from his house in 3rd Ave I thought.

Sandy yes Penny Farthing was next to the building society but in my remebering time I think they where books and video's they could have been a second hand shop also
