Which Boarding School!

Back in my day when WBH was still at its original location, we boarders used to saunter down to the cricket nets in the evenings before prep and sometimes afterward too. The nets adjoined the Wynberg Girls perimeter. The OM girls used to come over to chat.

I was always ticked off that they had better tuck than me! I tried to trade but my mother's ginger biscuits were not what they wanted.

Cecile Alcock, my cousin Adeana Wright, Barbara Winstanley and a few more OMers were there while I was at Littlewood House. Apologies if I cannot recall all of you.

Horrible brown uniform for the girls. We guys were OK. But the girls uniform was the dregs.

To get a complete Sunday off while obeying the rule of church each week, I used to wake up very early, shower, get dressed in my uniform and go to  Springfield Convent for early morning mass. Alexis Cruickshank and her sister were Springfield boarders.

Doing Mass so early left me the entire day to do what I wanted. Colin and Terry Earley used to go to the Mass at Springfield too. I enjoyed the Catholic Mass better than the CoE/Anglican one.

Rhenish Girls for me.  Its not pink anymore!! Its light yellow.  Such a shame.  Pink is such a good girly colour.

The terrible ......Good Hope Seminary

I went to Good Hope Seminary too - early 1970's!  We used to call it Good Hope Cemetery!  Complained bitterly about going there - hated being a boarder - but looking back - we had some great times.  Was there with my sisters Judy and Angie.  Judy and I used to bunk off after school and go down town - then sneak back in before study time (which we hated!)  Have sneaked back in by crawling under the matrons window many times!  Also hid in a wardrobe once with Judy when we came back from one of our 'outings' - Miss Charlton the headmistress came up to the room looking for us - she must have heard us giggling in the wardrobe but she never let on!  She just gave us really dirty looks when we went down to supper though.  ;)  Happy days!

Hey Paul, I remember coming to Queens to run a cross country, you still had a smoke or 2 before the race... man I was hopeless. I was so slow that the Queens school bus was driving slooowly behind me waiting for me to get a move on so they could pick up the markers on the road, then when I got to the finish, the finish line had been packed away and all the other schools had already left...

I'd love to see anyone else here top that for the 'hopeless at sport' award

Don't worry Paul, I got sacked from U15D rugby for tackling one of my own team in a match against Bishops, and still adamant that I hadn't. Damn... that was blind... too many witnesses.

The Holy Cross Convent (Windhoek) for Std 6 & 7 and then Wynberg Girls from Std 8 to Matric.  Got throught it without to many scars.  Lucky for me, we still went by air.
