@ Georgswa  -  yes, Idefix.  It has been so long that we have "re-named" him "Dogmatix" between a few of us, that I sort of accept that everyone else is also in on it  -  (kind of like those private jokes you share between friends or in the family where everyone else is left in the dark when you say something totally out of the ordinary).

@ Alexandre  - thank you so much for assisting my grandmother in finding her stuff again.  As she is really old, she tends to forget where she left them.  I will send you her postal address so you can return it to her.  (LOL)  Got some more pics you can share with us?

Artifacts, now...


1) gold item from an unknown shipwreck
2) part of a Ming Wan Li dish, c. 1614
3) part of a wooden rosary
4) recovering mercury from a late 16th century Iberian galleon

All of these now, from that late 16th century Iberian galleon:


1) a thimble
2) wooden combs to get your hair rid of lice
3) bottom of a small Ming porcelain cup
4) main mast step assembly. to the right, the boiler of the Run'Her, a southern blockade runner from the American Civil War, shipwrecked in 1864

Still the same galleon, prior to main escavation effort, after the removal of the sand overburden and the ballast pile:

1) outboard planking and frames. one can see the lead sheathing protuding from underneath.
2) the galleon's sternpost, showing one gudgeon (where one of the rudder's pintle would be inserted)


Some iconography:

3) a 16th century Portuguese shipwreck
4) Portuguese ships from the probable time of the one you have there (1538-1540) drawn by D. João de Castro during his trips to India and the Red Sea.

How do you guys go about finding these wrecks?  Give us a little more info on this i.e.:  do you first study the history of a ship lost & then try to locate the wreck according to last known voyage, then set about finding actual site or do you sometimes just "happen" to come across a wreck when searching for something else & then study it?  Average depths you dive,  deepest dive you have made,  mishaps  etc etc   -   .   Very interesting, all of this.
