Theres a photo from the late 50's somewhere in here, the early version of the bowl scraper was a tonnarokka, (I think)

I was standing outside the Spar on Thursday morning , offloading trucks, when a kid on a bike went past me, bringing back memories...what he was doing, was standing up on the left hand side of the bike, using his left foot to push himself along, as the chain had come off...I had forgotten about doing that...

In the entire town, only two parks have a rocking horse, the 5th avenue park, the small park behind the police station (fairly new park and new version horse)...and then in the pre primary is/was the original horse ...at least it was last time I checked....

I never got to smooch in the back row! Saturday matinee was the best - even if you had to queue for hours. Remember the serials: Flash Gordon, King of the Clay people, etc? I still remember the songs that used to play before the movie started: Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny...........

Remember when Four Jacks & a Jill did a show there?

Yes, I saw the 4 Jacks and a Jill there. Was quite an experience, probably one of my first "real" musical shows.

Back in the 70's at the Alexander house , every weekend was a live show... musical instruments from around the world.... Guitar, spoons, Banjo, Mouth Organs, Trumpets, Jews Harp, Accordian..... Rhona...Did';nt yer Mum play the Harp?

Erika, now you mention the songs in the biscope, I remember them as well - another two I remember from then is "Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe....." and "Kentucky Blues" by Loren Copley ....

Margie Bardenhorst was all ways first in line, at the top of the steps for the matinee. You didn't dare get there before her unless you wanted to get beaten up. Then she'd decide who her friends were on the day and they had the next 3 or 4 places, the rest well we'd just full in after that. 20c is what we got 10c for movies and 10c for the cafe.

@ Pam,
We lived in Ermelo in 1990 and walked into Checkers and who do we walk into - Margie and Andries. Made a quick duck out of there!! Anyway, about 3 months later we read in the paper that Andries had murdered Margie. She was apprently dead for a couple of days when a neighbour contacted the police and said something was not right next door. Police came out and found Margie dead.

Re the songs - what about "Daniel" by Elton John - can't hear that song today without being back in the movie house, lights dimmed, waiting for the movie to start. Amazing how music can teleport one back in time.............

4 J and a J... I remember Jill saying she loved kids. So they put on an extra (mini) gig for us at the matinee.

Yip, going to the cinema was great excitement - I even had a "special" outfit for the occassion - tomato red hot pants with a mini skirt that had white hearts embroidered on it and white heart buttons!

I also saw 4 Jacks and a Jill, loved the song about the crab that walked straight because it was drunk. Animal anti-cruelty league sell a book with a cd by Jill (Can't think of her name now) but was very disappointed with the music, sounded much better when I was smaller.

I remember that song Florrie - it was my favorite! The words in the introduction went something like....

"Herman was a lobster, he was a very proud lobster, because lobsters walked straight and true, but Sally, what was Sally? - Sally was just an ordinary beach crab, and Sally walked... sideways!
Now these two fell hopelessly in love, but their love was doomed right from the start...."

The song starts with....
"Herman and Sally on the beach one night,
the sea was calm and the starfish were bright..."

Loved the part where the neighbors were "skinnering" : .... maybe their kids would walk in circles....
It ended on a happy note when Sally was walking straight and true and when Herman approached her and asked how she manages it, she hiccups because she had too much to drink and therefore walked like a lobster!
