Thanks George and all Oranjemunder for that information (when TV arrived 1976) it was a bit of a shock when we arrived in South Africa no TV Jeez all that lovely weather.

We were in Durban. then we made our way over to Oranjemund, we left Durban on Saturday night and arrived in 'O' on Wednesday morning flying up from Cape Town.

With two children we were given a house ( I think our address was 7th avenue E42) there were no houses in front and to the east was the bamboo barrier.

No TV it meant books books and more books the library was a salvation and Saturday night at the Bio scope, that's if you booked on the Wednesday

It meant Margaret would have to go up early in the morning with a friend Dot Flynn and as we lived at the end of town sometimes they would get there and they were sold out of tickets.

Cigarettes were about 30cents for a packet of Van Ryan and  Odie Mister Brandy (not sure of the spelling these day's) 1rand and 10cents.

I remember the bioscope well, my mother used to work there, she worked in the ticket office.  We always went to the Saturday afternoon matinee.  I remember seeing Bambi thaere and crying my eyes out.

Those were great times.  Oranjemund was a great place to grow up.

Went and watched "the Fog" in 1984, I will never forget it, when we left the cinema that evening Oranjemund was not surprisingly covered in a thick blanked of fog, still had to walk my date back to her house, and then make my way back all the way to 9th ave.

I would have had the same feeling in the pit of my stomach if I had to row a boat across the ocean just after seeing Jaws. I have never walked that fast in my life, trying not to show any fear, worried my date might think of me as a woos.

Cutting through the allies at record speeds home, I ran into George, a St Barnard that roamed the streets those years, I don't think I ever opened the gate at home, straight over the fence, into the pondok, all safely locked up.

My memories are of;
-a thick haze of smoke ( and that was the kid's saturday afternoon sessions!)
-"the teenagers" snogging in the back row and "spoiling the film" with their commentary - especially about the "serials"
-my mother asking if I had enjoyed the film and me often telling her that it was rubbish cos it was a "love film" full of "boring kissing"
- queuing up from 06.00 on a saturday morning for the Beatles film (A hard day's night?) thinking it would be sold out, and nobody else joining the queue until about half an hour before the film started
- the film breaking quite freqently, or the reels being mixed up ............. and having a whole 10 cents to spend on sweets in the cafe...........and the smell of oranges being peeled in the dark.

Aaah yes - the black and white one reel serials! Brilliant stuff for young kids. Captured our imaginations and made daredevils of us all.
