Only "matjes" I know of is when the bergies in the Cape ask for matches to light their stompie, they call it something like that, so what is it??

I made roast chicken, roast potatoes, boere soet carrots, rice with gravy and a tossed salad. Oh, and washed down with brandy (that I brought with from SA) and coke, wine and me don't mix.

Shame, Julie has already picked up 2kg since I've been here. lol

Okay, here we go.
Matjes are hering. hey are caught in an age a which they could reproduce, but haven't done so yet. At least that's what I was told. As far as T know, they're prepared by a Dutch tradition. They're put into oil with spice to ripe. At this time of year you'll see signs at all mongers, that the new matjes are out. Some people eat them on rolls, or in salad ect. Importan is to nmake sure you've got plenty of onion....

Bismarck is sour, Matjes not, very mild taste, i also have some in the deep freeze, eat that like jnr says with lots of fresh onions and pan fried potatoes, a delicacy from Holland in Spring time.

In Holland they gobble them up in one go LOL like seals do.....

A quick story Daddy Georg, yes I know about rollmops and drinking. One evening at the Hockey Club, Vasty Old Boys were visiting. We were having down downs and I drank them all under the table,they couldn't understand why they all passed out and I (a girl to boot) was still going strong. My father had made rollmops for supper that nite and I must of had 6 of them.
