Name no 3..... would not be marking the land, but those lowlands , mudflats behind Luderitz to the SOuth, thus adding more weight to the positioning of Luderitz.... Anyone else agree?

Map 215 goes only up to Namaqualand, that is still below the Orange River and is part of the cape province

Here is my positioning of Oranjemund, the sailors missed the river coz it was blocked by the sandbar.... the river south of Voltas is the Holgat River.... which has been known to flood...see the other thread in here on the Holgat flood....

I think your map is not right, Your walvis is to me Lüderitz, see the proportion from CA to Oranje and compare that

Darn and dammit  -  my geography is letting me down  -  got to ask back my school fees!

You right Georgswa  -  the northern border I have drawn should have been more north.  Gonna take a good look at this over the weekend & try to paste a more modern map next to this one & then make comparisons  - 

  maybe you could do that Georgswa  -  seeing you are retired & I still have to work for a living  -  you might have a little more time on your hands!  LOL

There is obviously no scale to these maps

0.86 cm of the map is equal to those degrees of latitude marked at the left, they are roughly 111 kilometers or 69 miles...

That statement by mike makes more sense taking latidude of O-mund at about 27 ° South

You're right, it's too far south.


Are there any islets off the coast? I am betting that the coast was pretty much surveyed and the Ylheos Secos are a couple (or more) of Islets that are never covered by the tide or waves, projecting off the coastline.

Ag zu liebe  -  now I got to give back the school fees again!  LOL  -  Still -  the northern border is not right, so...

This is facinating  - (I got a massive presentation tomorrow and this topic is going to make my mind drift away from what I have to do)  -  but what is more amazing is how those old sea travvelers & explorers could make these maps & jot down locations and distances with the limited apparatus they had then.  They must have been geniusses!

Yes, there are a whole host of islands or rocky outcrops scattered down the coast, but mainly between Luderitz and halfway down to Omund, say at Bakers Bay......

all the time fascinating reading .. those old maps .. as Dalene said .. basic  eqpt and they charted their way fearlessly forward ...  and of course more fascinating our resident on site  cartographers putting clues together ...  I remain riveted..
