As a 1st Avenuer, you are an honorary Trees person too! But did you learn the trick of how to fall from thos (then) huge fir trees? Oh man that was fun once you'd mastered the technique.

I can't recall the Websters. Maybe a piccie will trigger the cells in the brain.

We did that Robert (E7-1st Ave)  , you used the branches as slides...... but we never went from a great height....in the 70's there were quite a few port Jacksons around....they made the most excellent slides.....

us kids used to torture the life out of the first avenue residents,great place for a game of TOK TOKKIE,the trees gave us perfect cover from the purple faced oomies n tannies that tried to catch us,never did get caught,ha ha

I was a tree-dweller myself.  Also had a great tree-house in E10/11.  Not so much 1st avenue - a bit too far from 11th where we stayed.  Only when I went to Mickey Steyn to play.  They also stayed in the beginning of first or second avenue. (Parents Dan and Renata, sister Daphne).  I still have a pic of his 6th birthday party.  Our Moms expected us at the same time - if I remember correctly, his birthday is 13 July, 12 days before me.  Yes, and sister Webster also came to see how we were doing after we were taken home from hospital.  My Mom says she was excellent with the babies. We had a nice row of trees to climb which ran almost all the way from the abattoir to I think 7th avenue.

....meanwhile back on topic, the BBC has a nice piece about how to generate cheaper diesel BUT that Godron Doos Bruin, still taxes the diesel by-product at the same rate. How utterly ridiculous when you consider that the used oils and chip shop oil would have just gone down the drain to help degrade the environment even more.

They tested the used "chip" oil on Mythbusters recently, and it works like a bomb. Problem is your exhaust smells like the inside of a fish 'n chips shop. ::

There's a guy here in Germany he collects the oil from restaurants. After letting it through a special filter he uses it as diesel. Quite cheap in the end.

Yea, and it compares very well with the real stuff. They raced two similar cars against eachother, one on diesel, the other on chip oil. The diesel car won, but only by a meter or two.

I think the government do not want us to use any cheaper form of fuel. It goes against their 'let's rip-off the public as long as we can' ethos. God forbid that we should use a cheaper non-regulated fuel!

Do you remember in the late 80's in SA. Raymond Ackerman from Pick 'n Pay found a loophole in the fuel retail laws, and started selling petrol at his supermarkets. It wasn't even a week before the Government shut him down.

I just saw this at the festival. Wow. What an awesome film (and soundtrack)!! This isn't just a film about a car, it's film about us, but more than that, it's an uplifting film about us. Most documentaries make me want to jump off a bridge after I leave the theater, but this one gave me hope. In the pre-hybrid days, the EV1 fully electric car was released by GM in the 1990s with great fanfare and hubris from Roger Smith (yes, the same Roger Smith as "Roger & Me".) It caught on quickly with consumers and gave GM a 3 year technological head start over the other manufactures. GM, however, had inadvertently built a car that required no gas, no oil, and no replacement parts. If they'd stayed the course, GM would be where Toyota is today with the Prius, but with no gas required. But they, and a host of others, chose a different course. This films chronicles the struggle of the dedicated EV drivers (men and women, everyday folks) who decided to take a stand. A stand against who? A stand against auto manufacturers, big oil, the federal government, the state of California, and ultimately their fellow consumers. If one person can make a difference, wait until you see what a growing coalition of one-persons can do (and are doing)! Be afraid, Goliath, be very afraid. As one girl in the audience put it, "I can't believe I cried over a car...twice."
